I recommend the article below. She does mention a store credit card, as did someone else who answered your question, but if you use one of those be careful of annual fees and high interest rates department stores usually charge.
Pay all your bills on time!!!

Some good answers above but consider getting a husband/wife or other relative to add you on as an authorized user onto one to three of their accounts that have been open for some time and that have never been paid late, its the easy way to establish credit.

I dunno, but check out two sources for some research and self-education. First, online, try Motley Fool - www.motleyfool.com - has lots of articles and advice concerning money, not just stocks. Second, get a copy (buy it, even) of Jane Bryant Quinn's "Making the Most of Your Money" - a big, fat book that is continually revised. Quinn was Washington Post financial columnist for a long time.

By the way - you're very smart to not want a credit card. If you ever do need to get one, pay it off monthly and don't go crazy. You seem like you have a good head on your shoulders (your question is good, as is your grammar), so you'll be fine.

Lots of good advice already. If your goal in building credit is to eventually buy a home - which you should do as soon as possible - you should look at this from a lenders viewpoint.

"Good credit" means three accounts that have been open and active for at least 24 months. The advice to open an account, use it for two months and close it, is nonsense.

Traditional credit using three accounts might be 1) a student loan, 2) department store card and 3) an auto loan. Keep these payments as low as possible relative to your income and you'll develop a good traditional credit score.

You can also develop what lenders refer to as "alternative credit." This is fine but it limits the loan choices when you go to apply for a mortgage to only those first time homebuyer loans that allow "alt credit". As mentioned in some other answers, "alt credit" can be rent, car insurance, utilities or even proof that you make regular and steady deposits into a savings account.

If you don't want a credit card, I echo the suggestion above , get a JC Penney or Macy's card with a low limit, use it every now and again and make your payments on time.

Lots of choices - if you're starting off clean, you're ahead of the game. Good luck!

get a credit card pay 2 payments on it and then cancel the credit card out and pay your bills on time

If you are renting a house or apartment, paying utilities or a cell phone - that is building your credit. When you go for a loan, get reference letters from your utility companies or your landlord stating that you have paid timely each month.

You could try to open up a store credit card account.... they usually have low limits so you wont rack up a bill right away. Another option is to co-sign for a credit card with your parents, then you can share their credit for awhile. Also, taking out a car loan, or a student loan helps your credit. Hope this helps! (but too much is no good.)

And yes, a cell phone in your name will help.
