You can find a complete list of credit cards to help build your credit history here:
http://www.asapcreditcard.com/unsecured-offers.html
Although these offers tend to have higher interest rates (and additional fees) when compared to 'standard' credit cards-- they'll allow you to establish and build your credit history over time. Eventually, with regular on-time payments-- you'll be able to apply for better offers with lower APR's and less fees.
If you're going to college, you might also consider a 'student' credit card. These offers also have higher interest rates-- but include less fees than the offers above. You can find a complete list here:
http://www.asapcreditcard.com/student-cards.html
Hope this helps. GOOD LUCK! |

This is a good question, that really depends on your level of responsibility. If you are responsible with payments and simply wish to get a credit card to build your credit, then I suggest any major credit card such as CapitalOne. BUT! The way you use this card is what really makes the difference. First off - to build credit you have to use your card, the more frequent the better (don't overdo this however!), and than you also need to keep a balance. So the fastest way to build your credit is to use your credit card to pay for gas or maybe small items at convenience stores, and then pay off all of your credit card but maybe $20-$50. This keeps a balance in your credit, but it is not enough to really hurt you in interest rates. If you are not very good with budgeting and such, I suggest going with Orchard, whereas you have a deposit and any mistakes you make will not be so detrimental.
On a final note - since you will be a full time college student (as am I), you will find that you need more money than you get from a part time job. Therefore you will most likely be maxing out your credit card(s) by the end of the year, having to pay them off during the summer, so I would suggest Orchard. |

I would reccommend that you get a bank account first and maintain it. A credit card with a part time job is not your best plan. If you have a cell phone in your name you are already building credit. Just make sure that you pay your cell phone bill and manage your bank account.
Secured credit cards make it appear as though you are irresponsible with money. Why do you need a card anyway right now. Trust me when i tell you that you dont want to do anything to ruin your credit and if you lose your part time gig or change gigs and have to wait for a check you dont want a credit card co increasing your interest rate or cancelling your card then just leave it alone until you ahve a full time job.
Do things the old fashioned way-save your money for big purchases. Use a lay away when you can-they seem to be fading out but kmart stll has them and their is a law away website. Not sure how great they are check on them with the better business bureau
i hope this helps |

As a college student with a part time job, you should be able to get a great student credit card that pays you rewards. For example, the Citi mtvU and Citi Driver's Edge for Students cards are two of the better rewards cards for students.
To quickly compare student credit cards to see which will pay you the most in rewards, you can plug your spending profile into this rewards calculator:
http://www.creditcardtuneup.com/
Note that this focus on getting the best rewards card assumes that you'll be paying off your balance in full every month -- which is the only really good way to use credit cards. That way you'll build your credit, avoid interest, and earn rewards. |

secured card is best to start: If you can't handle your payments your card is secured with a deposit. Your deposit can be $99.00 up to $500 or more: pay good and you can incerease your credit line.
I like Orchard Bank and recently I also really like Bank of America's $99 secured card for $500 credit line! :) |

Citi® Bronze®/AAdvantage® MasterCard®is by far the most widely used card. It is essential for regular travelers with average credit. Its reward program gives you an additional mile per $2 spent on the card. You can collect up to 25,000 miles annually, and can be redeemed for flights on partner airlines, hotel accommodations throughout the world, and car rentals. Additional benefits are: zero liability for unauthorized transactions, travel accident insurance and various Internet account associated services. The card does not charge any annual fee. But the drawback is the minimum APR cap for cash advances, set at 19.99%.

Ask your parents if you can get a card on one of their accounts---And only use it for emergencies. At then end of the month just send them a check for what you owe. If they trust you they should do it. If they see you being reckless with it they will just shut you off. That way you cant really get hurt. I suppose they could though. Just make sure to be responsible with it and when you graduate from college you will have already built yourself a decent credit history. Way to many college students get their own cards and them up killing their credit history before they even enter the "real' world.
This is what I did. Then when I graduated I was able to get my own lines of credit and have built up a very good score over the last 5 years. |
