I've heard of credit cards which are secured by bank deposits. Ask a bank about one. |

To be honest, now is not the time to be looking for a credit card. Think carfuly about why you actually need one......and you'll probably come to the same conclusion as many others, you actually don't need one! Avoid credit at all costs, it'll frustrate your life if you can't deal with the interest the credit card companies pile onto your card. My advice, give it a miss. |

I'd suggest not getting one. |

That would be a big mistake.
Credit is not money.

It is definitely a frustrating situation to be in. You don't have credit so they won't give you a credit card, so you can't build credit to get a credit card. But there are options!
One of the fastest ways to establish credit is to buy a car with dealer financing. They will finance almost anybody, and with this year's economic trouble it might be hard to leave without a car! The downside to this is that you have to be able to make the payments, and get insurance, and then your credit score still won't move for 6 months.
Another option is called a Secured Credit Card. Basically, you pay the bank the amount of credit you want to have, like $500. They give you a credit card (not a debit) with a $500 limit, and you use it just like a credit card, pay on time, keep the balance at zero, and after about 6 months you have a credit score. Some Secure card providers will return your security deposit after a certain amount of time, some will increase your limit, and some will offer you a normal credit account. Not all banks offer these.
Finally, you should ask yourself why you want a credit card. Will a debit card with the Visa or Mastercard logo do the things you are thinking about? A lot of people get into deep debt because it is so easy to pay with credit, and then their credit card bills are larger than their paychecks! Saving up for the things you want saves you all the fees and interest that the credit card charges you. Just something to think about.
Hope this helps! |

Are you going to college? Most banks offer student credit cards to students who open bank accounts there. They only give you a small limit (300-500) but it is a good way to work up your credit. Just make sure you make your payments on time. |

Try to sign up for one of those cards that requires you maintain a checking account with a certain balance that in case you dont make a payment they deduct from. |

The first thing you need to know is that having and even using a credit card will not necessarily give you a real credit history. Credit history is normally something that is acquired when you take out a loan of some sort, for a car, house etc. However, that does not mean bad credit card use is harmless. Before you sign up for a credit card I recommend you watch the movie "Maxed Out" it does an excellent job of explaining the pitfalls of using credit cards too much. But finally to answer your question, you can go do a google search on credit cards to find a place to apply for one. But be very, very careful with them, its easy to use the money but remember, you have to pay it all back and then some. |

Start with a gas credit card - that establishes some credit.
The gas/oil companies don't generally require any credit history but if you pay off the cards on time, you can establish history.
Then you get department store credit cards, and then finally general purpose credit cards.
And then a mortage. |

if its just to use with the internet to pay for things online etc, you should apply for a debit card. You can use it like a credit card online or at the shops but its using the money in your eftpos account. You don't need any credit history or interview etc. You just apply and get one it takes 5 minutes, you can get a visa debit card with any bank.
Otherwise if you haven't been approved it may be because you aren't earning enough, and if you're not earning enough, why do u want to give yourself debts? I'm sure you don't NEED a credit card, when you can get a debit card at your age. |

Why first question would be why do you want one so badly? Do you are a consistent stream of income coming in that will be able to make full payments (not just the minimum payment) on the card every month? Do you know fully about the risks associated with having a credit card? That even a couple missed payments can show up when you go to buy a house 10 years from now.
Just because you are 18 does not mean you are ready to take on the responsibility that comes with credit. You need to sit down with your parents and talk to them. If they won't co-sign for it, there is a valid and good reason, it is not just to be mean to you.
If you really want one however, DO NOT get one off the college campus. The interest rates on those cards are staggering and will cripple you. Look into a secured card from the bank you deal with now (you put down a deposit and your credit line is the amount of that deposit). This will help you establish credit without getting in over your head. Also, look into your bank now to see what they offer in the way of unsecured cards with a low interest and low credit line. |

get a job, open a bank account, keep some money in the bank, turn on a cellphone and keep it paid, order some magazines or something keep that bill paid..and eventually you will get a small credit card.. ps, cash is way better than credit. credit is gonna get you in trouble. trust me i know all about it, and i wish i never gotten one. the interest rates are insane, and you will be mad at yourself, 200 dollar charge can easily turn into 500 dollars over time if you dont pay what you charged.
oh mine is by capital one, btw |

The best way to attain credit is to sign up for a credit card for a store. Sears, for example asks it you want one whenever you make a purchase. |

Based on what you wrote, it doesn't sound like you need a credit card, just credit history. If you have student loans then they will build your credit for you. Also you said "no one will approve me" I assume that means you have tried and been denied, if that is the case then stop applying! You will do nothing but lower your credit score if you keep applying for cards and are getting turned down. Wait another 6 months to a year before trying again.
And btw, bank debit cards do not show up on your credit report and neither do utility bills. |
|

It's just me.

Go to a bank, start an account, and they should be able to help you from there. My first card was through my bank. |

This is a common catch 22. How can one get credit (without established credit) in order to establish credit? See the reference site at the bottom for more details on how to establish credit.
Just an FYI - Keep your balances to about 30% of the credit line. You will be able to build your credit, get good scores and receive better offers for credit terms. |

I'm 20 and signed up for a Capital One card almost 2 years ago. It was very easy and I had no prior credit history. Your max starting out will probably be around 300, but try it out! |

If you are 18 you can just get a credit card. That IS how you start credit. Go to your current bank (assuming you already have a chequing account) and ask them about it. They will try to swindle you into all kinds of programs and deals. Just say I just want a simple credit card. Probably a student account if you are in school.
This is all assuming the age of consent is 18 where you are. It is here in Canada so you won't need your parents' signature. |

Go to your local branch and talk to them. They know that you need to have a card to build your history, that won't keep you from getting one. I opened mine at Bank of America if that helps. I did some sort of student plan too. |

You can try getting a secured credit card. That's what I did. I had no credit, now I do. (Make sure you have a job first) |

If you have a job and a bank account, go to your bank and ask them to assist you. Do this in person and be sure you are dressed nicely and are well-groomed. You may have to speak to the manager but you should be able to get your card if you have had your account for a year or more and haven't had any problems such as overdrafts. |

You need a bank account first. No bank account = no credit card. Then ask for a student debit card. It gets you start on card transactions. When you have some kind of employment, then ask for a starter credit card. It has a low limit, and gives you a chance to learn to manage your credit on line. Learn how to make payments on line. Now you're getting really sophisticated! |

try putting your name on some bills your parents pay to build credit like the electric bill or gas bill. get a phone on a contract? bring in paystubs proving your employed? you could probroly get your banks credit card much easier. |

There are banks and credit card companies that will do a student credit card if you are in school. There are also credit cards that are easier to get, but you may have to pay a yearly fee. Try Capital One. |
