Once you start working you should get offers in the mail.
What I did was I signed up for a department store credit card after I got my main card. |

What everyone in my family did was to establish credit at a jewelry store, first. Buy a nice watch or something on credit, then from there move to a bank credit card. Of course, you can skip the jewelry store altogether and just get a secured credit card. That's where you open a cd at a bank or credit union for say, $500, and get a credit card from that bank for the same amount of money. The bank uses your cd as collateral for your debt, so they aren't worried about you being a poor credit risk. After you have had it for a while, you can get another credit card that isn't secured. Just make sure that you make all the payments on time and never go over the limit. |

First of all, you need to get a small credit card. Department stores are you best bet since the standards aren't so high for getting approved. Then put a manageable balance on it and keep the balance on it for about nine months. Make your payments on time every month and after that just pay it off. Do this a few times and it will start to build you credit. Don't worry though, good credit won't show up on your report until after nine months. Also, here is a warning, don't max out your card! Don't even keep a balance over fifty percent of your limit. This is viewed negatively and will lower your credit score. So for example your get a credit card with a limit of $300.00, don't charge more that $150.00 on it. Well, good luck and try your best to always keep your payments on time and your balances low, because good credit will help you purchase something like a vehicle at the lowest rate possible and then maybe something like a house. Good Luck! |

I am hesitant to give you this suggestion because it can become a downward spiral if you are tempted to use the cards, but I read somewhere that if you have a bunch of open credit cards, but have a 0 balance every month, that really raises your credit score. Also, when you get a bank account with a debit card, always use the "credit" option and not "debit." That will also help your score without the risk of overspending like on a regular credit card. If you make any monthly payments, always pay the full amount every month. Don't allow any amount to roll over to the next month, i.e. overspending. Never ever be late on any payments. Do this until you graduate college, and you should have established a great credit score. |

You need to establish credit card accounts (Visa, mastercard, discover, amex). In order to build a positive credit score you need to pay your bills on time. You can apply for one online. |

You can get a secured credit card. That's what I did. You send them some money, like $200 which they keep in an account for you, and they send you a credit card on which you can charge up to the deposit amount. They hold your deposit in case you don't make payments. If you are good at paying on time, eventually they will give you your deposit back and then you have a good credit rating, at least from that source. |

Thats great you want to get started. First get a small bal credit card and buy yourself something nice (lol) but then make your payments on it. Now if you have a $300 credit bal. and you charge $300 and then you have the money to pay it off at the end of the month dont!! I know it sounds good to pay it all off, but to build your credit you need make PAYMENTS, i.e pay $25 a month for 6 months, always on time and never below the min amount. If you can manage to get a couple cards that would be great. Just be smart, its not free money, you will always pay back more then you charge. At first you will prob get a credit card that charges a fee, like $58 of so.. thats ok, thats just the price you pay to get things rolling. Once you have made payments for about a year, then cancel the high interest credit cards with yearly fees; by this time you should be able to get lower interest cards with no fees. Your credit with affect your whole life, be smart!!! |

The best way is to open a "security deposit" credit card. You will deposit to the issuing bank a small amount like $300.00. They will issue you a card that will have the limit of your deposit. After six months, assuming you have always paid your monthly bills on time, they will offer you a real credit on a different account. The offers will come also from other financial institutions, since they all share their information. Be careful to choose a good and big (nationwide) bank. Since they are the major credit issuers. |

Get a credit card, but don't use it. Just haveing the card in your name will establish credit. You will get offers in the mail, but you can also find a card you like and apply on line. All credit cards have one for those that are starting out. Discover card is a good credit card to start. You will just have a lower credit balance, but if your just wanting to establish credit that won't matter.
Having a department store credit card will also establish credit, if do this make sure it is from a major company (it just looks better).
Also, car loans and cell phone plans (those with a contract) will also build credit, but you will be paying more for that contract.
Anything that requires credit, will build credit, if monthly balance is paid.
The credit card, or deparment store card will be the easiest way to establish credit. |
