I left the US in 2002 without repaying a car loan. I am re-entering the US, am I likely to be identified?

Additional Details
My question was am I likely to be identified at the port of entry itself? Is my SSN tagged for loan default to be visible to the officer at the port of entry? What is the penalty for not paying back a loan?

I'm sure its on your credit report already. You may already have a default judgment. It will hinder you from getting credit, however, it will come off after 7.5 years unless it is a judgment then its 10 years. As soon as anyone pulls credit on you the car loan people are apt to start calling & harrasing you due to being able to find where you live/work from new creditor info.

we've been waiting for you

certainly you will be caught.

better pay the dues (with whatever interest)

probably but fortunately your credit is probably so screwed that noone would likely consider you for a new loan and all the can really do is repo the car (if it still is around) or report you to a credit service and possibly wage garnishment depending what state you will live in.

Gal from Yellow Flat
Not at the port of entry. Debt is civil, not criminal.

For sure if you try to apply for credit - that will be a huge black mark on your record

CHAZ2006
no, credit reporting agencies do not have any relationship with homeland security

Certainly you must have received the mail after you left USA
and perhaps did not look into the obstacles you would face on your return.
Yes, not only you are likely to be identified but you are likely to be prosecuted for defaults.
Hence it is not too late to repay the same by informing your financers of your intention to settle the account, which will be the best solution.
Alternately try your luck and be ready for any eventuality on your forthcoming to USA

Man that debt is so old and you have been out of country for 5yrs they have giving up on you long ago even the slimy debit buyers have thrown the towl in on that loan. Just dont start looking for a new car for a bit.

Damn, that loan probablly doubled due to the interest it gained. Maybe I should see if I can get a bounty/reward and help catch you. Besides, it's people such as yourself that neglect their financial responsibilities leaving the rest of us to pay for them. Then again, if you were foreclosed on or filed bankruptcy due to job loss, then I can understand-- but in 2002?
