In today's academic world, most students need a college student credit card and the good news is that the offers for these are plentiful. Many creditors are very anxious to have the new college student apply for and get approved for a student credit card, because they realize that if they can strike up a good relationship with this customer at this young age, then it is highly likely that they will be their customer for life. And make no mistake about it, the credit card industry is making money hand over fist these days, especially since very few consumers pay their entire bill in full at the end of the month, so all those interest charges add up.

But the ease of getting a college student credit card is also the bad news because many college students have not yet learned responsible financial management. The temptations when a student is away from home, living in the dorm or an apartment, are tremendous – spending a little here to have a night out at the bar or dance club, spending a little there to chip in for a keg of beer, whipping out the plastic to get airline tickets (even though they are a great deal) for the spring break trip to Florida, and the list goes on. Apply online for a best student credit card at: http://www.credit-card-gallery.com/Student_Card.html

yea i know where u are coming from. I have this problem too. one thing thats very sketchy about this whose credit game is you cant get a credit card without credit but u never had any in the first place. Well my advice to you is start off with a store department card or a student credit card. The rates and credit line in my opinion are ridiculous when compared to gold or platinum cards but you have to start from somewhere. P.S. make sure you look out for the APR and Annual fees and see which one is the lowest rate.

If you have little or no credit, you have a couple of options...

First, you could apply for a credit card designed for people with poor / no credit. While these offers tend to have higher interest rates (and some additional fees) when compared to standard credit cards, they'll allow you to build your credit history and improve your credit score. You can find a complete list of these offers here:

http://www.asapcreditcard.com/unsecured-offers.html

But if you're a student, your best option might be a 'student credit card'. These offers a designed specifically for college students-- and have less fees than most of the offers above. You can find a complete list of student cards here:

http://www.asapcreditcard.com/student-cards.html

Eventually, with regular on-time payments-- you'll be able to apply for better offers with lower APR's and no fees.

Hope this helps. GOOD LUCK!

Girl, don't get them online. You are looking at HIGH APR. Bad choice! Go to a local credit union or better, a school credit union, because most of them are not look out to get your dough. Some credit cards make you pay THEM...careful in the world of credit.

Claire
You should go to a bank, or a bank's website, and apply for a student card.

There are Visa & Mastercard credit cards that cater to people with no credit history or bad credit. You should not have any problems getting one of these. Best of luck.

Good for you for taking a step in the right direction: you're establishing good credit history for yourself!

Because you are a student, you can try qualifying for a student credit card. Most banks have such a card. Beware of high fees, annual fees, activation fees, high interest rates and low credit limits. Compare the terms of each card.

If you can't get a student credit card, you can establish good credit history by opening a secured credit card account.

The best secured ones have no annual fee, no activation fee, and they do pay YOU a tiny interest rate on your security deposit. Look around for "semi-secured" cards that require a security deposit that is less than the entire credit limit you will be offered.

To compare fees and rates, type the following words into a search engine:
compare student credit card
compare secured credit card

Before you sign the application (or click Submit), call the credit card issuer and ask them, "Which of the credit reporting agencies do you report to?" If they don't answer, "All 3, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion" then find another card. You need to develop history at all 3 agencies.

It is a myth that you need to carry a balance - and thus pay finance charges - to improve your Fair Isaac (FICO) credit score at the fastest rate. 35% of your score is for payment history. You can score max FICO points by making a small, NECESSARY purchase once a month on the card and paying the card off in full every month, always on time. Examples: groceries, gasoline or a utility bill that you set up with auto-pay. Eventually, you want to show a mortgage lender that you don't need credit for anything except a mortgage loan. Change your lifestyle so that you don't need to carry balances.

You can get a free copy of your credit report from each of the 3 major credit reporting agencies (CRAs), once per year, at www.annualcreditreport.com. Look at your TransUnion credit report. It reports up to 48 consecutive months of activity, month-by-month, in a little box. Your goal is to produce a string of 48 consecutive boxes having OK in them, on every account, no finance charges. That will be a beautiful sight to a mortgage lender.

30% of your score is credit utilization: how much of your credit limit is used up by your balance? You need to keep your balance below 30% of your credit limit, or you will hurt your FICO score. For example, if you have an $800 credit limit, you must not have a balance higher than $240, which is 30% of $800.

If your credit cards are secured, you can just pay the start-up fees the first month. After 6 consecutive ontime payments-in-full for 6 consecutive months, ask to have your card converted to unsecured, have your security deposit returned with interest, and have your annual fee waived. If the company refuses, try again at 9 months and 12 months. The company may convert you to unsecured automatically. If your card goes unsecured and you have no more fees charged to it, leave it open. 15% of your FICO score is for length of credit history. The older the better. The average credit user has an oldest open account that has been open for 14 years. They also score you on the average length of time all your open accounts have been open.

You cannot improve your score by closing credit card accounts; you can only hurt your score. Close your account only if you must pay a fee to keep it open. (i.e., an annual fee). Don't close this fee based account until you have opened a prime, major credit card (MC, V, AmEx, Disc).
