Fred D | I need help , I'm bankrupt!!!? |
Ok I made a series of financial blunders. I earn around 30k, but I owe about $150k in student loans and a $50k mortgage, how do I get out of this jam?It seems at the end of the month I have nothing and I haven't even started paying studnet loans back. Luckily I have no car payment, and I plan to buy a car straight out or find a good used one. Now that I'm getteing older I just need to figure out a way out of this mess. Additional Details Yeah my job is teaching. What a joke! I did grad school and all that other stuff in philosophy. Then got a teaching certificate after cause I could not find a college teaching job, so I figured I'd at least teach little ones and earn some money too pay bills. But I need a lot more. |

Bankruptcy does not resolve you of student or mortgage loans. as for a car they don't necessarily take it away you ... You need to talk to an attorney.
Can you get lower rates on your student loans? Deferments is possible . |

First create a budget. 30k isn't a lot, so it's imperative that you discover all the leaks in your finances. One of my major leaks before budgeting was going to the soft drink machine at work. Once you figure out where all of your money is going, you can control it more.
Second, look into consolidating those student loans into a longer repayment period. It will cost you more in interest over the life of the loan, but at least you won't be in bankruptcy court. (Student loans are typically not absolved through bankruptcy anyway.)
Third, look for ways to cut your current expenses. Adjust the temperature in your home when you leave for the day so the electric/gas bill is less. Close doors and vents to rooms that you don't use. If you subscribe to the Sunday paper, clip coupons. Eat out less frequently. Rent a movie instead of going out to the movies. Eliminate extras like caller id from your home phone. Reduce the number of cable channels you subscribe to.
Fourth, go through your belongings looking for things you don't need/use anymore. Sell them on craigslist or at a consignment shop.
Fifth, until you are solvent, think about getting a second job. Even if it's a low paying job at the local mall, it's better than bankruptcy. |

first of all.. what did you graduate as? 150 grand is alot of money for student loan. Unless you went to professional school and diddn't graduate. But if you graduated from professional school you should be making more than 30k..
anyhow, the best way to deal with the problem is get another job. and if you have credit card pay it off first cause that is the highest interests account. Then work on paying off that mortage within two years.
Meanwhile the student loan should be on deferment. You should call the loan company and tell them that you have economic hard ship. After two years of paying off mortage, you should have one less thing to worry about.
Now pay off your student loan. First consolidate your loan into a lower interests rate one, and make plans to pay it off over the next couple of years.
In general it will take you about 7-8 years to get out of this jam. I will be in the same boat as you if I dont graduate from medical school. And i believe alot of other american people are also in the same boat.
Worst case scenarios is leave the US and move to the caribbean and get away from your debt that way. haha
I am sort of saving myself a little right now while i am in school because i am doing a little bit of investment to make money to hopefully pay off some of my bills as i go..
I am investing in such company as http://www.e9u.net , and some stock such as yahoo, apple , and peif |

get a credit counselor or brush up with some help from financial gurus Dave Ramsey or Suze Orman. They both have shows where one can call in or email questions for help. They both have books and cds that may be of some help also. Good Luck |

I woud suggest making your mortgage the top priority and always make sure it gets paid first.
As for student loans I would contact an advisor. You should be able to consolidate the loans into a manageable payment.
You will have to pay for a looong time but its better than them siezing your tax returns and possibly putting a lein on your home.
Under no circumstances should you let them refinance your student loans into a new mortgage. You will just end up paying more in the long run.
You could however refi your mortgage into a new 30-40 year plan. 50K over such a long period of time would be a very cheap monthly payment (which you could refi or pay off rapidly later). This would allow you to free up some extra cash to pay back your student loan. |

Well its important to keep paying your mortgage, now with your student loan, ask for a forbearance so you'll have sometime to pay it off. Or get a part time job and use that money to pay off your bills. |
|

having a franz off(permanently)
 |
just keep paying the debts back until you pay the money off and if you only work a few days a week get another job because it will help to get out of debt and dont get another loan to clear the one your currently have. you could move into your parents house so you dont have to spend money paying rent electricty bills etc you would have to pay a small amount of money. |

if u declare urself bankrupt they will take your house and car (hnce dont buy one til after) after ur bankrupt you wont be allowed to get a mortgage so will have to rent for a VERY long time. i would say go see a debt advisor and maybe do a IVA..which will allow u to pay some of ur debts off over 7 years at a small percentage a month. you may still lose ur house tho if your mortgage payments are not met. can u not remortgage or sell you house and rent? |

1. You are insolvent. 2. Bankruptcy (self-induced) is the coward's way out. 3. Look at interest rates applied, thus far. 4. Either dispute principal plus interest, reject and disown, and, take legal action in relation to; extortionate credit agreement/s, or, hope you win the lottery. 5. Forget about buying a car - you are in cloud cuckoo land. 6. Talk to a lawyer. 7. Talk to an Accountant. 8. Take sissors and cut all your credit cards in half. |
