If the account is so delinquent that it been sold (greater then 120 days) you paying off the debt might not do anything to help your credit. Ethically you should pay, but it may not help with your credit score. You should talk with a credit service. Usually the first consultation is free.

if you have the money, just pay the bill to the collection agency. the original creditor doesn't own the debt anymore and credit card companies are famous for "losing" such info. since it's already on your credit report, call the collection agency and see what they will take as a settlement and pay them by money order. never give them electronic access to your bank accounts. they paid pennies on the dollar to buy your debt so save yourself some money. regardless--pay the debt.

cap
if its already sold, pay the collection agency.they will even charge more fees so do it soon.you want to avoid attorney and court costs if they decide to bring action on you.

a_robleto
DON'T PAY, the credit company sold your account, that means they don't care anymore if you pay it or not, and the collection agency pay just a few bucks for you account so that they can collect, the collection agency can't sue you or take anything from you, only the original creditors, or if you want to settle for something with them to keep you credit record clean, then you call the shots, YOU TELL THEM how much you are willing or can pay.

Josher
Yes you should pay it off, but make sure you get written reciept of the transaction and a written statement that the collection agency will stop harassing you. You want to protect yourself and have proof that everything has been paid.

Keep the paperwork as ammunition against them and future collection agencies will not be harassing you. Some collection agencies will go overboard.

Try to negotiate. If it's possible, you want the collection agency to promise you that they will remove this from your credit report if you pay it off.

Good luck.

Yes, but if you are not interested in getting any new large ticket items (car, house)see if you can get the account paid as a settlement . It might be a little less. Just remember it will go on your credit as " settlement payment".

Of course.

Well if you are going to pay it I suggest that you asked for this to account to be deleted for a payment in full. Hey they want there money they will be more then happy do to that. You must be very diligent with this process, collection agency's are know be be unethical and you will get a nasty surprise on your credit in a few years.
1. call the agency up, tell them i am prepared to pay for this obligation for in ex chance of ALL negative information for this account to be removed. If the repressive dose not do this talk to a supervisor. They will ask you to do a payment over phone for this, thats like giving money to junk yard dog. Tell them you are going to send a letter discussing the teams discusses, or have them send a letter to you with the tearms. I have enclosed a sample letter with a agreement you could send certified. Once they recived the certified letter or you recived the letter from them. Send them a money order! never a check or anything with a personal info. Hang on to all that for a life time, pull your credit report in 3 months and if there is any negitive info on this account you can file a law suit against them. where you will win, and if that dose happen post another answer in here for advise. these steps will save you thousands.
Dear Creditor,
Re: account no.

This is to confirm the settlement offer agreed upon by me and your customer service representative <name>, <phone no.> on <date.>

I really appreciate that your company is willing to work with me in settling this debt.

The amount we agreed to settle this debt in full is $_____. However, any references to late payment, collections, charge offs and other negitive information on this account must be removed from my credit file.

If the above terms are acceptable to your company, please sign the attached letter of agreement and return the copy to me. Only upon the receipt of the ?signed agreement?, I will send you a money order in the amount stated above.

Yours truly,

PAY IT IMMEDIATLY!!
If it has been less than 30days since it was turned over for collection then it moght not show on your credit report.

Skip the advice of paying the Original Creditor direct, they just forward on the money to the collection agency anyway and if you dont pay the correct balance ten the collection agency wolt list it as paid and can still harm your credit.

I would contact the colelctor and ask for a supervisor and make arrangments to pay it if they REMOVE it form your credit report. They are under NO obligation to do so, it is a favor, so remember that.

get it in WRITING that they will remove it.

Tom K
see how old the debt was an the last activity on it !!!
never pay collection agency until you get it in wrighting
and never give out your checking or routing number
get acopy of your credit reports from annualcreditreport.com
check your credit see if it on it .. after 7 years you have dont pay it falls off any way statue of limitations

Erin S
Call the credit card company and speak with someone who deals with accounts that are in collection. I doubt it would be the person who answers your initial call. See what they say before you go the collection agency. If it is already with an agency you might not have a choice but to go through them, I'm not sure on that. Whomever you talk to see if it is possible to keep it off your credit report.

Another thing is consider if you have any other accounts that might be going to collection. If you do, you might not want to pay one big bill off, you may want to make sure you are making the payments on others in order to keep them from collection. HTH

Pay the original creditor. Don't pay the collection agency.
