I paid off my debt, should I cancel my credit card?
ok I paid my last cc bill. I don't have any debt anymore. Should I cancel my cc? A few points:

-I've had it since 2005
-my limit is $300
-I need to improve my credit which is at 600

I want to buy a home one day or a condo of my own and I will need credit for that. I'm afraid of closing this card because of the credit history and because I want my credit score to be higher. At least in the 700s.

I cut it up in half so I can't really use it anywhere. I had to stop myself somehow. How else can I build credit? What can I do? Please help me, I'm desperate.
Additional Details
I'm 25 if that is helpful.

At a three hundred dollar limit, I wouldn't consider it high enough to get myself into trouble and would probably keep it to charge a tank of gas a month on for the added credit score.

Cancelling it will harm your credit rather than help it. Keeping it, charging less than $60 a month on it and paying it in full will help. Getting a second card and using it the same way will also help.

Adding a small installment loan for variety in credit will help.

QuickAnswer
don't close it! You need the history. Use it every once in a while, you have to to maintain the history!

Don't close the card. It often helps to have open lines of credit that you are not using. Just use it periodically so that the lender does not close the account due to inactivity.

you can improve your credit score by not charging no more than 40% of your credit limit.
don't close that account, you will need it, just control your charging.
I know theres a book called "Debt Cures". you can purchase this book at debtcures.com. It's a really good book. Lots of information on how to improve your credit score.

Control yourself. "I can't" is not an acceptable answer. You're an adult, and you control your life, not cards! I think you should use CC's, but keep track of how much you're spending. Also, always pay as much as you can, not the minimum, or else you're losing hard earned money.

PS: Online banking has really helped me keep an eye on my spending, I can see how much is in my account and manage my finances.

Closing the account can actually effect your credit in a bad way. Longevity of accounts is something that is looked at when applying for credit. Applying for a loan (personal or car) is a fast way to increase credit and also CD's (if you have money that can be tied up for a length of time). One things though is not to apply for a line of credit for a few months prior to applying for a home loan. Credit to Debt ratio is something else that is closely looked at.

Get another c.c., only use it occasionally and pay balance in full every time. Ask for a higher credit line 1 or 2 times a year.

if you think youll go ott (over the top) with the credit card then you should cancle it. My sister had the same trouble but we live in england so its a bit different. But she got into loads of debt useing her credit card so she cut it in half. but if you are good with handeling money then you should only use it occasionally on things that you have to. Your credit history aint gonna be good if you have spent too much on it and cant pay it. Just think about it.

You don't need a credit score to get a home loan. Find a bank that does manual underwirting. It's the way home loans were givin' before all the fico score worship. You can get the best interest rates out there. 1 in 5 banks still do manual underwriting.

The only thing that obsessing with your credit score will get you is debt. That's all.

Credit cards, along with the fico score was designed by banks to get people into debt and keep them in debt. They spend millions brainwashing people into thinking they need a credit card and a high fico score to make it in todays world. That's a total load of crap.

The only way to improve your credit is to show that you can handle credit. It's great that you have paid off your debt but you need to start using your card on a limited basis and to pay it off each month. Call the card company and tell them that your card was damaged and you need a replacement.
Try to only use the card for something necessary like groceries. Don't use it for anything else.

Once you establish a regular pattern of payment you can request a higher credit limit. You must pay it off each month. If you can't pay it for a month at least make the minimum payment and stop using the card until it is paid off.

If you have cut your card up because your spending is out of control and you can't stop spending beyond your means then you need to seek mental counseling about your compulsion. It is more important to get your spending under control than to try improve your credit score.

bizmom is right. Closing the account will lower your score, not raise it. You did the right thing by cutting the card, but don't close the account, it's your credit history.
