I received a bill for a debt I dont owe?
I received a bill from C.C.A. collections in Norwell Ma. today saying that I owe Sprint telephone for A former cell phone that I paid in Advance and cancelled it 2 days before the next bill would be due, and 2 years after the contract expired. It has been reported to the credit reporting companies saying that I owe 71.00. If i send them A check for 35.00 and mark it payment in full, will this go away? Any advise will be appreciated.
Additional Details
The debt is supposedly from 2005 and want it removed from my bureaus because i need to refinance my house.

Unless you have proof that you paid the remaining balance in full, you may have to pay them. I don't think this will grossly affect your credit, but I would get it resolved before it turns into a major problem.

Contact them and try to negotiate a "forgiveness debt." In other words they may forgive the debt if you pay about 80% of the bill if I'm not mistaken. Don't just send them a check for a random amount and hope the problem will go away.

Once you've negotiated or agreed to just pay the bill and leave it at that, make sure you get any new agreements in writing and make sure you get a notice that the debt was officially paid.

Good luck and hope this was helpful in resolving your problem.

First, a single $71 dollar debt won't affect you being able to refinance your house.

Second, write a letter to the collection agency stating your case. Provide as much proof as you can of your side of the issue, dates, receipts, whatever.

Third, check your credit reports. If you see the collection listed, write a letter to the three major credit agencies disputing the claim and asking that it be listed as such on your credit report or that it be removed as disputed.

If you feel like paying the money just to be done with it, get an agreement in writing from the collection company before you send any money to them.

do NOT ignore it but also don't pay it (yet).

Dispute the charge and advise the collection agency that they must cease and desist and that you will only deal with the originating creditor (do all of this in writing, you can find copies of dispute letters and cease and desist letters on the web).

Once you have done that, contact Sprint and explain the situation and see if they will waive the balance. if not, try and settle the debt for $35 (which is about what they'll get it you pay the collection agency the full amount).

no it won't go away until the 71.00 is paid

This happened to my husband with alltell. They won't even give him a copy of this supposed last bill. He refused to pay it and now it is still sitting on his credit. I know that you probably don't owe it but I would pay it just to go away. Sometimes that is the easiest thing. Have you tried disputing i?. We have done that with some we didn;t think he owed and they were taken off.

I would get more information on it and see where the charges are coming from before you pay for anything. If they are able to go into detail and you can remember causing the charges then go ahead and pay them off but I would look into it first because you don't want to pay for a bill you didn't create. I'm quite sure they have a toll free number you can call to get more information about the charges..I used to be a bill collector myself...

Dont_taze_me_bro
Simple: If you owe it, pay it. If you don't, don't

If you are disputing this bill, who is verifying the debt, sprint or credit burrows? If the verifaction has your signature on it, there isn't much you can do, i would pay the debt, but also get it in writing from the collection agency that is has been paid in full, and you are requesting an update to your credit report. FYI, in the future if you have this problem, request that the company gives you 30 days to do your own investigations and not damage your credit reports until completed. The will if you ask them.

For $71, I would try to negotiate a PFD (pay for delete). You may be right, you may not owe the money but for that small amount of money if they will do a PFD, it would be worth just to not have to hassle with.

No, merely paying a debt will not remove it from the credit bureaus. It will only be marked as paid unless you negotiate a "pay for delete" agreement with the collection agency.

Do not pay them anything before you have that agreement in writing. If not, they have no incentive to delete the entry from your credit files.

forgivebutdonotforget911
You say you will pay $35 to clear the debt. Meaning you are arguing over $36 dollars. If you can not pay $36 to clear a dumb debt, you should not be buying a house in the first place.

Pay the $71 dollars.

(Marking the check "paid in full" does not work as all they have to do is cross it out and write "Accepted as partial payment."
Then they can still bug you for the rest.)

yaguru
no it won't go away. you didn't pay your last bill. Now you will have to negotiate with the collection agency to figure out how much they will accept, and you will still have a bad mark agaist your credit.
