I recieved a letter saying an award had been entered against me in the amountof several thousand dollars from?
a company I have never heard of with a company called National Arbitration Forum. Never received a notice to appear, but had received something months ago from this company saying they were going to take action. I tried calling them, but couldn't get a live person. I thought it was a scam, because the voice mail wanted my phone number & social security number, which I was reluctant to give without knowing what is was about. The amount was for considerably less than is now showing on the award letter, also, they state I agreed in January to have it arbitrated, which I NEVER did. Heck, I don't even know what this about. Can anyone help me? The letter is dated August 23 2006, but I just recieved it. The company information gives a phone number, again, no live person to talk to, they want your phone number to call you back, which I don't want to give, without more info. Anybody know whats going on & what I should do? I own my own home, have no job, no credit & can't pay this.HELP

If you're concerned, write a letter asking them for more information. DO NOT include your social security number.

It sounds like a scam to get your personal information. Call your State Attorney General"s
office and tell them what you told us!

This is a scam. Contact your local better business bureau.

It definitely sounds like a scam.... What I would do is pull your credit reports-- all three bureaus-- and see if anything related to them is on there.

If it IS on there, add a consumer comment to your report detailing it, and then launch disputes and follow up with the company to get it figured out.

Don't sign anything. Do not give them any personal information. See below.

Sounds like a normal scam. Report them - start by right clicking on the email and then on properties, find out all you can. Usually everyone gets the "please help me email from nigeria, in the amount of 10 million dollars. Spammers are always trying to be creative. From time to time I even get this type of email.

They probably all ready have your phone number unless you have call blocking.

If it would put your mind at ease, copy the email and take it your local police station and give it to their commercial crime division.

Any legal issues would have to be delivered to you by way of postal registered mail "NOT email". Courts do not normally issue financial awards without first sending you a summons to appear so you can state your case. Even if I did get a registered letter in the mail I would make a few phone calls first.

DO NOT THROW AWAY THE ENVELOPE THAT IT CAME IN!!

It sounds like they sent it late on purpose so it would seem as though you have had the letter for 30 days or more. Make sure you dig that envelope out of the trash if you have to. It has the post mark on it. I would make at least 2 copies of the letter and the envelope for future reference. Whatever you do, do not let go of the original letter and postmarked envelope.

It is a scare tactic and deceitful practice. I would write them back demanding validation of this debt. Do NOT give them any personal info about yourself, even if they demand it. Tell them that you don't deal with 3rd party collectors.

Validation of a debt requires a copy of the original signed contract for the alleged debt, as well as a detailed accounting of the alleged debt; including payments made, interest charged, fees charged, etc. If they do not provide this information to you, then they must BY FEDERAL LAW discontinue reporting it to all credit bureaus. They have to delete it from your report if they cannot validate it.

Don't talk to them on the phone; only by certified mail.

Scam. Never give any info over the phone. That's a good way to get your identity stolen.

Contact an attorney for advice. Most will give you a free consult. If you have NEVER had any credit cards or loans, then I would assume it's a scam. If it is a court issue, the presiding court would be listed on the letter. If there is not another way to identify them, I wouldn't worry about it. You could google the company as well and see what it says. You may find all the answers you need. Good luck.
