Means you don't have any credit history. It is tough for young people to establish credit. My 19 year old tried to finance a computer through Dell and was denied for the same reason.Best thing I can think of,if you are ever offered a pre-approved credit card(I get them all the time in the mail and my credit is lousy)sign up for it.Even though you will probably have to pay a yearly fee and the interest is higher, you at least will have some credit history to build up.Buy something every month, but not more than about $40.00 worth and pay the whole amount off every month.Within about 6 months you will have built up some credit and should qualify for a lower interest card, then cancel the one with the yearly fee and high interest.

the letter will tell you why. Also, starting off with a gas card is always good so they can see your payment history. Don't worry... you WILL build credit! see what the letter has to say first! Good luck!

It means you have no credit history, good or bad, for them to make a decision on. You need to establish credit elsewhere and then they will consider you.

You sort of answered your own question.

Because you don't already have a credit card, you have an "insufficient credit history on file."

It's kind of a never ending loop.....you can't get a credit card if you don't already have one.....but you have to have one to get one. If you never had one....its harder to get one.

I'd try Sears. They are one of the more generous creditors for first time borrowers.

Just remember.....take it easy on the spending and make certain you pay your bill very promptly.

Remember that 65% of your credit score is how timely you make your payments and the amount of outstanding debt.

Running your balance really high and not paying on time can really, really screw you.

If you have to....take a secured card (one where they require a deposit to back the card) and make some smaller charges on that and pay it off. That will help build up credit history and you may then qualify for a larger, unsecured line.

You should thank them for denying you their credit card. What you really need is a VISA or Mastercard. Go to your bank or go to Providian.com and get a secured card. The interest rate is going to be higher but all you need to do is charge $100 per month and then pay it off every time the bill comes in. If you pay just the minimum payment then pay the bill every 2 weeks. This will build your credit and in 2 years your credit scores will be higher. Then you can get a unsecured VISA, Mastercard, Discover credit cards.

Department, retail, and gas credit cards are usually financed by Finance companies and not real banks. These credit cards are always scored lower than credit cards issued by actual banks. If you get a car loan make sure that an actual bank is financing the car not a finance company. Car manufacturers such as Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, etc. are banks and not finance companies.

A consumer that has been denied credit has the right to be given a reason why. You can call the credit card company to get a better explanation. If the previous post is correct, then you will need to develop credit by renting, purchasing and repaying. For instance a buy here / pay here auto dealer can extend credit fairly easily. You may want to purchase a car this way the next time and quickly pay off the loan so as not to accrue too much interest. You could try to apply for credit at another store and purchase and repay quickly. It will just take time to establish credit.

"by the way i do not own a credit card"

Advice - You don't own credit cards, they own you.

It means you have no credit history....I built mine up by getting a "secured" credit card..bascially you give them 50 bucks and they give you a 100 credit limit, and you build from t here....worked for me...good luck.
Be sure to make sure it's a legit company ....most MAJOR banks offer a secured card of one kind or another.
Also you can get secured loans from the bank, same you put up half basically, but just the "point" of paying it off will build credit over time.

A big piece of advice, Dont do credit cards. If you dont have the Money...dont buy it. Your life will be happier that way. If you have to have one for hotels or car rentals or plane tickets then do Visa otherwise, dont buy anything you cant pay off in three months. Remember..credit card companies borrow money at 3-5% and charge 21% interest or more. They are rich , thats why Capital one owns the airways.

NO CREDIT OR BAD credit

That means exactly what it says. You don't have any credit history. You need to build it up. Best way to start is having your name on one of your parents good credit card. Tell them you want to build up your credit. Ask them by saying "Once my card arrives , cut it up". Tell them you don't even need the card.

If you want to start on your own , Only credit card that will probably will approve you is capital one. They will give you $200 credit line with $69 annual fee. I know it sounds very stupid but thats where you start. They will raise it up as soon as you start making payment on time and keeping your balance low. need to use it though.

The best and the fastest way to build your credit is option #1. For example , If you add your name as an authorized user, some credit card company won't even report to the 3 beaureus. Citi Bank does. So not only will it show on your credit report , you will also get the longevity of that credit card. say your parents had that credit card for 10 years. Now you have credit history of 10 years. Joint is reported to the beureu . Joint and Authorized are totally different. You won't be able to Joint but anybody including my dog could be an authorized user.

Do yourself a huge favor do not ever get a credit card, I am in credit card debt up to my neck and the credit card companies even though I had never been late and never over the limit, have raised my interest rate from 5.99 and 6.99 up to 29.99% which is now making it impossible for me to make my payments if I could go back in time I would not have gotten any cards. But I lost my main job and need to use credit cards to buy important things like food, gas, heating oil, I even paid a house payment too. Really all credit cards do is get you into trouble. Buy something like a car on credit if it is your credit you a trying to build.

Speaking as a nationally known credit expert (book, radio shows, newspaper columns, etc.) you were denied either because of bad credit or no credit. Go to both of the links below and get a secured credit card at each. They are major banks--the ONLY kind of secured card that really rockets credit.

You'll have to deposit money into the banks' savings accouts for one year. Then they won't be secured any more.

In the mean time, build credit scores by charging them up on daily purchases only. Try to charge them to just BELOW the limit every month and pay them off every month.

After the year is up, ask for credit line increases every six months until you get to at least $3000.

If you pay on time and never go over limit, your credit will soon be "platinum" (very high scores).
