I want/need a new life, can I leave my debt behind?
I've been going through a real low point in my life for a while now. Last year I broke off my engagement when I realised it just wasn't what I wanted. Don't really know what i want from life but it wasn't that. I was off work at the start of the year with stress/depression and the icing on the cake was being made redundant last month.

I've thought for a while of leaving the UK for a new start abroad but something that's always stopped me is my current dept of around 14k. If I was to just go and ignore the debt would my family be held responsible for it? Would I be traced abroad and expected to pay? This is not something I would normally consider but failing this I can honestly see the next consideration being something far more serious and final. I just seem to be getting deeper and deeper into a hole.

Any advice appreciated, thanks.

Running away from life is not the answer. Most of us have issues and wish we could start with a clean slate. You have to leave the past behind but learn from the mistakes you've made. Without too much information about your life, I can only offer the following advice:
1) Find a career that makes you happy. Something that allows you to be who you are and helps bring the best out of you and yet helps you pay for your essentials.
2) Quit using food or shopping to satisfy emotional cravings.
3) Get active. Exercise; play a sport; preferably team sports.
4) Try to pay everything you can towards your debt and aim to get debt free. Get disciplined financially. If you feel like buying something, ask yourself if it is something you really need or is it something that you are wanting but could live without. Make getting rid of debt a priority.
5) Besides sports, join some other social clubs and get involved in activities including volunteering. i.e. spend more time with friends, family, and community
6) Whatever you do, dont kill yourself! You're gonna die for sure one day anyways. Why not figure out what you can do with life? Its a one time thing anyways.

Cheers!

I felt just the same as you at the beginning of the year. What i did is move back to my Mum's house and for the first 6 months i only went out once and worked unbelievable hours just earning as much money as i could. It's funny because i've managed to so far pay off 14K of my debts this year.

It has been really hard work but it's a great feeling paying off credit cards and loans. Look around for work there's always something out there. I'm lucky as i got a job working from home paying me for as much work as i can do. That's now coming to an end and i feel well lucky to have had that.

I don't know the ins and outs of what will happen to you if you do a runner but i'm sure your family wont have to pay or get in trouble, it's got nothing to do with them how your finances are is it? but do you really want to be worrying that there might be companies after you when your in the u.k?

I really want to go travelling or get a job abroad but still owe money and i think the only thing to do now is work me nuts off. I don't know how old you are but you've still got your life ahead of you, try and be strong and think it's not too late to turn a corner and have a great life. It's funny how some things turn out or happen.

I hope that you get a lucky break but in the meantime keep your chin up and be strong,

All the best.

M8 I know that feeling. It's the cloud that is over you all the time, even when your having a good day then ping, it comes back.

You need to think positive. If you concentrate on the bad things in life then you will only attract more negative energy into your life. Once you feel good about yourself, thing slowly start fallng in to place.

I watched a guy on TV talking about this, which I thought was crap, but I listened to him and it made a lot of sense.

It starts the moment you wake up. Instead of thinking, need a cigarette and a cup of tea, Lie in bed and give yourself one goal to do that day. I don't mean to just get through the day, something like phone the bank, make one payment to something, a little sacrifice, going to the dentist. Just one thing that is a put-off.

Always try and be positive.
Stop what you are doing just now, try it. Look away from the screen, close your eyes and try and let your body go, as if relaxed.

Did you feel the weight lift off your body ?
That's the negative energy that surrounds you.

Most people live in the moment, too worried and don't even realise. The brain just switches off to the real world.

Believe in yourself.

I'm afraid that running away isn't going to solve your debt problems, and while I realise this seems like the best solution, get away and leave everything behind you, it doesn't actually work.

You've taken the first step by realising that you are in difficulty, so the next is to get some help and advice from experts who are used to dealing with this sort of problem.

Contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau

http://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/index/getadvice.htm#searchbox

most now have specialist (mental health) debt advisers.

It would be helpful when you go to see them if you can take details of all debts outstanding and proof of income as well.

Or

See if there is a mental health charity in your area:

http://www.mind.org.uk/Mind+in+your+area/

again, they are likely to have specialist workers who can help you with debt advice.

It is possible to stop things getting worse, both organisations will need to know about all your income and expenditure on either a weekly or monthly basis. They will then complete a budget sheet with you, which will determine what are your priority debts and which aren't.

Any priority debts need to be addressed first and these include; rent, council tax, tv licence and utilities, other debts are classed as non-priority.

The budget sheet will provide information on how much you can afford to pay to anyone who you owe money to. As the name suggest, priority debts will be paid first and other debts only paid if you have enough money to do so.

The budget sheet will also show how much you reasonably need to live on each month, and will take account of food, clothing and transport etc. This can then be used as evidence to support you in asking for any payments to be reduced, and to have any further interest stopped.

Most companies accept these offers of payment and accept the payment that is calculated in this way, as they know that if debts are taken to court they will be dealt with in the same way. It is important to treat all debts in the same way and only offer payments that you can afford to make.

Both CAB and your local Mind association are used to dealing with these issues and do so on a regular basis. They are used to dealing with local government, utility companies and credit card companies, and it is unlikely that with them representing you, you will have any major problems in agreeing terms.

It does help having specialist help and guidance, and you need to do this through reputable organisations that have no financial interest whatsoever. There are some companies who offer a similar service, but who will charge you for doing this. Don't be fooled by them, this can be done without incurring further debt.

Please seek advice from one of the organisations I have suggested as they are independent. Putting a stop to further interest charges, and feeling that you are making headway in controlling your finances will make you feel better about the situation.

Debts won't go away if you ignore them, you will still be chased even if you leave the country, and as you say, it is possible that some companies will and do, hound family members, to find out where you are or to try and get payment from them.

Please also try these links to the Mind website as they may prove helpful -

Understanding depression:

Looking after your personal finances:
http://www.mind.org.uk/Information/Booklets/index/personalfinance.htm

the information is easy to read and understand.

Support and information is available to help with both your debts and your mental health, if you know where to look for it.

Hope this helps.

Yes, your debt will follow you wherever you go, and will continue to ruin your credit rating as long as you do not at least make minimum payments on it.
You have several routes to consider. One is bankruptcy, which will destroy your credit and will be on your record for years to come. Even then the debt may still follow you, check the UK laws.
Another route is to hire a debt consolidation agency. They will contact the businesses and schools to whom you owe money and negotiate payment schedules for you. Then you pay the debt consolidation agency a manageable sum each month until your debt is paid.
A third route is for you yourself to contact your debtors and negotiate repayment terms. The fact that you're willing to talk with them and work something... anything... out is a plus. Be honest and keep them informed. Some businesses (like doctors) may forgive some debt if you have no means of repayment or are on the dole. Education loans are not so forgiving.

My advice to you is to cut your credit cards in tiny pieces and not acquire any more. Sell any expensive cars, stereos, etc., and use public transportation; use the proceeds of your car and toys to pay your debts. Move to much smaller living quarters or back home with your parents. No more take-away meals. Buy second hand rather than new. Save anywhere you can, and repay your debts as quickly as possible. Take a good hard look at your skills, talents and knowledge and put them to work.

Take charge of your finances and your life! Right now you're depressed and feel shackled by the weight of your debt, but it doesn't have to be that way.
Good luck!

Until you change your spending habits, youll just stack up more debt in your new place.
Moving is probably ok, but get help with your debt. Not sure if there's debt councelors there?
You will feel stronger if you know how to make your money go where you want it to go. Instead of just watching it slip away.

Go to daveramsey.com and you can ask questions of him on that site. Get his book at the library and read it and follow the plan. You can get out of debt and have a wonderful life!

Hi you need sound advice, ask your local council for income and expenditure statement. . Only thing you have to pay is things you can be jailed for. Council tax and TV licence. Ignore all the threating letters and never enter into an agreement to pay as little as 1p per month. Cheer up and stop worrying, e-mail me if you need more advice. :)

I think I understand that the 14K is in pounds which translates to about 28K in dollars! Wow! I would be depressed too! If it was me - and thank God it is not - I would file bankruptcy. I do not know what the rules are in the UK, but whatever the cost - check it out! What do you have to lose? Good luck to you and please get rid of those credit cards. No you cannot run away from your responsibilities - and as I do not know your age - I do not know if you family would be forced to pay your obligations.

gordonmother
In my view, that is the best solution, if the debt is in your name, it will not affect anyone else and most companies will write the debt off and even if they sell the debt on, as it is the Nome now days, they can not trace you abroad for 14k, as it is not cost effective. In stead of being sorry for yourself, tell your family to tell the creditors in writing that you have immigrated and they do not know your whereabouts and get on with your new life. Good Luck !

Jesus is lord of all heaven and earth there is nothing he cant do for you just put your trust in him

Beast from the East
Yes, if you move abroad you can avoid the debt. but it is better if you do this permanantly. They won't do anything... they will only write you letters. But if you return they could try to confiscate your house etc... (if you have one). Don't worry about it.... I have about £20,000 of debts and I am only 21, but I don't care because I don't own anything of value that can be confiscated. Good luck.
