I want to open a bank account but have a bad credit rating?
Does anyone know where I can open a bank account where my credit rating wont be a factor - I dont want an overdraft, loan facilities or credit card...just an account and a debit card.

your credit history (there is no such thing as a credit rating, all financial institutions make their decisions based on their assessment of your credit history) will not affect your ability to open a bank account. it will however adversly affect your ability to get a debit card.

your best bet is a flex-account from nationwide. the one without the cheque book only comes with a cash point card, but you can use the account like a current account when it comes to doing standing orders and direct debits.

Alternatively try Halifax. Their basic current acount will give you a visa-electron card. a lot of places wont take this, especially over the phone, but you can use it in tescos and petrol stations etc. so you can lead a fairly normal life with it.

Your credit rating has nothing to do with your ability to open a bank account.
You may not be able to have a debit card, but you will be able to have a basic account.

first try to improve your credit and then open a bank a/c

Go for one of the building society accounts - Halifax & Abbey do them. You can open them with small amounts of money and all you get is a debit card and cheque book.

WWW.SUREFIREFINANCE.CO.UK can help with bank accounts, credit cards, loans and mortgages for people with very bad credit.

That is wrong - your credit rating does affect opening a bank account.

When you open one you need to specifically say you just want a basic account, and they should do this for you. Try Lloyds TSB

Emma
I had this problem a few years back. I found that the best one was Nationwide. They will only give you a basic account but they'll give you an account even if other banks have refused you and they have easy to follow online banking. They will also let you apply for further facilities when you feel your credit rating has improved, chances are they'll deny you but you are allowed to apply every 6 months. They wont give you a debit card though, which sounds silly to me as it's your money you want to spend.

They do a credit check when you open an account, for whatever reason.

I was on the same boat, and had no problems opening a checking account wih the Bank of America, online. I is free if you schedule your direct deposit. I love it

Deep Thought
if you don't want overdraft and loans, i see no reason why you sholdn't be able to make one

Your credit shouldn't matter when opening a bank account.. I have overdraft protection by putting a small amount of money in my savings and then if my account is lower than i thought i am protected. You also can open a savings acount with a debt card thats attached. Try bank of america or something like that

I believe you can still open an account, but they wont give you Switch cards or anything, however I think there is something called a Solo card that you may be given and you can use this at some places but it has a limit. Try Abbey Im sure they do it.
