I was late on my credit card payments for three straight months. How much will that affect my credit score?
My credit score was 750 before this happened and I have not checked it since the late payments which were Mar,Apr,May of this year. My wife was handling the finances and payed a $50 minumum payment every month instead of looking to see if the minumum payment had raised which it did of course. I called Chase(credit card co.)and they said all three got reported to the credit burea. Anyone have any ideas on how to get them to remove the late payments? Then how bad will my credit be messed up and is there anything I could do know to affect my position? The good thing is I own a home, have not been late on my morgage, car payments or anything else. Help!!!

It will hurt. Especially with 3 of them. It could cost you 20-40 points. They will not come off for years. Chase will not remove them. There's nothing you can do. You're not going to like this part of my answer, but it's true. She's not to blame for this disaster, you are: she's not to be yelled at for your error in judgement. One with good credit takes responsibility for their own payments. That's why it's YOUR credit. Married or not, if it's in your name YOU need to be responsible.

Chase is one of the very worst. But chances are you are still in the 700s and can easily get another card. So call them, explain the mistake, calmly apologize for making the mistake, and request they remove it. And be sure to say if they don't within 45 days, you'll transfer all balance to another card and close the account.

You are easily in a position to do it. And Chase usually does not have the best rates or terms.

ollowing critical factors affect your credit score in a major way. By knowing these you can keep a check on them and make your credit score a healthy one.

1. Re-payment history

This factor carries the highest weight in your credit report. How steadfast are you in repaying your loans, makes your credit report shine. Experts claim that this factor alone accounts for 35% of points in your credit score. So, if you falter on repayment front it is sure to be reflected poorly on your credit score.

2. Outstanding debt

The next comes your debt burden. How much you owe is a factor that according to experts carries about 30% weight in your credit score. This is
30% is based upon outstanding debt. To get a better score it is advised that you keep your outstanding debt to a minimum.

3. Length of your established credit history

The time for which you have a credit history also matters. The longer your established credit history the more credit reporting agencies believe in you. This could be simply because of the fact that they have more data to analyze your financial position. Experts give it a 15% weight in determining your credit score. The best thing to do is just start paying regularly, forget about the mistake, and let it wash out of your FICO score over time.

In the FICO score, Payment History counts for 175 out of your 550 earnable points in a FICO score (which ranges from 300 to 850). Here's an excerpt taken from the description at http://www.uthunk.com/ . You can go there for more details on the FICO formula:

Payment History is a whopping 175 points and is the most complex. Late payments are killers here apperently. One late payment on an installment loan can wipe away 5 years of good payments. 60 days and 90 days erode your score in this category faster than water on your sandcastles. Collections are like grenades. And there is no easy fix except time and consistent good payments. The max is around 175 if all your accounts in the past 6-7 years are paid on time. ALL of them. Late payments are weighted (mean more) if they are more recent….and tend to be less destructive as they appear in the past. They “weight” these by looking at each account, seeing the reporting per month and seeing if each month was on time, 30 days late, 60, etc. They are not kidding when they say “pay your accounts on time”. At least the minimums. Paying more than minimum does not count here (THAT will come up in the extended credit section if your balances are too high). They only want to see your payment history. Apparently there is no leeway or tolerance in this section. This tells them (creditors) how serious you are in paying your bills.

Call them up and tell them what happened and that you want it corrected since you are a good customer. they should work with you.

If will prob. lower your score for about 6 months, after that you should be fine.

I would throw the largest, most annoying tantrum to try to get yourself out of this :) Call the company, threaten to shut down the credit card - threaten to write letters - it was an HONEST mistake. They certianly have the ability to rectify the ding on your credit - and make it clear to them that unless they do, you will not do business with them

A ninety day ding will take your score down into the 600s. Definitely try to get it fixed.

Chase is a bunch of you know what's. Don't worry about it. Late credit card payments fall off after only a year so long as they weren't seriously late or in default. If you pay everything else on time, don't worry about it. Keep your Chase account for another 6 months while paying it on time and then close it. That way it only shows up as a "customer closed account" paid in full type of thing. You can try the old "I'm going to close my account and transfer my debt if you don't remove it" But, make sure you can make good on it. If you've never paid late before and have a long track record with them they should understand that stupid mistakes happen and care enough about keeping your business to remove it.

You can put an explanation on your credit report so that anyone who pulls it also sees the explanation. But everyone doesn't always look for explanations. I would just catch back up. As those three months get farther out in the past and you haven't had any recent bad payments your score will recover though it could take up to 7 years to fully recover.
