CINDY m | IF U FILE BANKRUPCY HOW LONG BEFORE U GET BACK YOUR CREDIT?? |
|

Man, all but one of the posters simply do not know what they are talking about.
You can start the day your bankruptcy discharges, I went through this 7-years ago and was lucky to have loan with Ford that I reaffirmed on and made sure they kept reporting to the credit bureaus.
As soon as my BK was discharged I got two credit cards used them for everyday things kept my balance below 30% of my credit limit every month and paid them off in full before the due date.
Within 1-years my score had gone up over 150-points and I was approved for a brand new car at 3.9% with no money down. 1-year later I bought a home at 6.5% fixed with no money down.
Today 7-years after my BK, my credit score is higher then it was before I filed.
It will show on your credit for 10-years but it's not the end of the world, believe me I have been through it. |

yanks006 and the Spiffman are correct....too many people here on Yahoo respond to answers that they don't have a clue about!
IF you prepare yourself prior to filing bankruptcy....and IF you begin immediately in repairing your credit...you WILL be able to get credit within a couple of years.
Even if you file for Chapter 13! I am working with a few people right now who filed BK13 in early early 2006. The now have two credit cards, a small secured loan, and their credit score is 680.
It's even easier with a Chapter 7! But you need to do your homework. Good credit isn't going to happen overnight. |

All of the answers I've read from other users are non informed answers.
The true answer is 2 years. My bankruptcy was discharged 2 years ago and I just closed and moved into my new home. Recived 6.585% interest rate with 100% financing.
A lot of it will depend on how you manage credit from the day of discharge.
I took out 3 credit cards that were fee laden. However they all reported to the major 3 credit agencies monthly.
I also financed 2 cars. With higher interest rates and then did refinances to lower the month and rates.
You will be ok. just be smart and stay within your budget |

10 years...
Bankrupcy never really goes away beacuse soooo many lenders will ask if you EVER filed for bankrupcy...
It would be best for you to look into ALL other avenues before you go down that road. I would suggest even that it is better to simply default on the debt then to declare bankrupcy... a default goes off your credit report after only 7 years.
Good luck, I wish you the best! |

10 years until the bad credit goes off your record, then you need to re-establish credit. That can take up to about 3 years of constantly on-time payments, no closed accounts, early and extra installment payments OVER time.
So at least 12-13 years to get your credit BACK with much work. |

They say 10 years - but I've had several credit card offers in the mail already, and my case hasn't even been discharged yet. You can start rebuilding your credit quite quickly these days. It will take 2-3 years for you to be able to start establishing credit again - however it will say that you filed bankruptcy on your credit report for about 7-10 years. |
