SadToday22 | If I could, what would be best to pay of first: Student Loans or Credit cards? |
I owe about $10k in credit cards and about $50k in student loans. I feel I should ditch the credit card debt first since I can claim my studen loan interest on my taxes. What do you think? |

Get rid of the credit card debt first. It's probably a higher interest rate than the student loans, it's not tax deductible and it could have more of an impact on your credit score.
Frankly, I can't think of a single reason why you would want to pay off the student loans first. There's just no advantage to doing it that way. |

Pay off first whichever has the highest interest rate! |

Credit cards since the odds are they have the highest interest rate. Suggest you cut up those cards and do not charge anything till you get your debt under control. |

Always pay the credit cards first. They usually have the higher interest rate and carrying balances of more than 30% of your available limit, hurts your score.
Once you get the credit cards paid off, you can throw the extra at the student loans. |

personally id pay off the student loans and then the credit cards. if you get rid of the one that costs the most the second one would be easier to get rid of!! good luck!!!!!!!! |

Pay off the credit cards they have no value, the student loans part of which are tax deductible and are of a longer term and less interest are the ones to keep making payment's on |

Pay off the credit cards first. Revolving credit utilization always hurts your score more than installment accounts (student loans). If any debt could be considered good/helpful, it is student loans. Plus, students loans *should* have a lower interest rate than your credit cards. So not only will you be saving money in interest charges from the cards, but your credit score will also benefit by lowering your utilization for revolving credit. |

You always pay the smaller and higher interest rate of the two, which I know is your credit card. |

Pay the credit cards off first. Once they are paid off use the amount you were paying to the credit cards and pay extra on the student loan. Make sure you indicate that you want the extra money be applied to the principal. You may have to send a separate check for that. Best thing to do would be to contact the creditor to see how to do it. It would be to your benefit because it lowers the interest you will have to pay and, of course, you will pay it off sooner. |

student loans usually can be paid up to 10 years after the loan.
Pay the one with the highest interest rate. |
