If I do one of these free credit report pop up ads, will I regret it?
I know I should have great credit and am curious because of news warnings etc.

You might. Some of these are just attempts to generate business lead information, and lead to spamming. Some are more sinister, being a kind of phishing scam designed to get information from you that could be used for identity theft.

If you want to learn your credit report and score (and to learn much, you will want both your report and your score), you should forget getting it for free and spend the 12-15 dollars to get your report directly from one of the three reputable credit reporting agencies: Experian, Transunion, and Equifax. All legitimate financial agencies in the United States depend on these three credit reporting agencies.

If you want a free credit report, which is not as detailed as the score+report you can get from the three reporting agencies listed above, you may be entitled to one limited report for free per year. This is available from www.annualcreditreport.com. You generally are entitled to a free credit report any time you are denied credit by any potential creditor.

In matters of credit and finance, it never pays to go with anyone who seeks you out unsolicited. That means never do banking business or credit reporting business with anyone who cold calls you without your calling them, who appears in a pop-up ad, or who e-mails you without your e-mailing them first.

You will be inviting them to infect your computer with viruses and trojans and spyware. Absolutely never click on those things. If you need a report, go directly to one of the credit bureaus and just pay them. It's cheaper than cleaning your computer and wondering who has all your personal information.

Yes the report is "free". But you wont get the "free" report unless you sign up for their credit monitoring program. If you really want to know about your credit, just call your bank. You can get a real FREE report through them.

kurt_tricia
yes, don't do it. get your fico score directly from the Fair Issac website or one of the big 3.

Studly
There is only one truely free and safe source to get your credit report from.

www.annualcreditreports.com

All of the other sites will scam you into thinking it's free.

I do not know of any place you can get your CREDIT SCORE.

captures_sunsets
Just be careful there are a lot of scams out there, and there are a gimmick attached to most of them. use your common sense.

Go here: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp . This is the site that was set up by the three credit reporting agencies. This is the only site that you can get your credit report for free with no strings attached.

you'll get lots of spam...

Andyste
Depends on how good the company are...
if its a well know company with good records there should be not problem just watch out for people phishing

tynidevil
You may regret it. You are subject to spam and viruses and every other internet "headache" you can imagine eventhough a lot of the companies promote their end of the transaction as safe and secure. Your best bet is to call or write the Credit Reporting Agencies yourself. Check out www.pueblo.gov (or .org, I can't remember) but they have lots of useful information and pamphlets on checking, restoring and safeguarding your credit.

charlie
Don't use the free credit report pop-up ads. You can contact Equifax directly and request 1 per year for free. See the link below for information about Access to Free Credit Reports.
