If I don't answer a debt collector's calls, will they stop calling?
I was considering getting caller ID on my cell phone for a month or so and not answering when I don't recognise a number. Does anybody have experience with doing this? Will they give up when they don't get through for a month? 2 months? Thanks in advance!
Additional Details
PS - I plan on paying them when I can actually afford it. Until then, I need to get them to stop calling me a 8 AM.

NO...........I AM A BILL COLLECTOR.

They can legally call you from 8am till 9pm. Your best bet is to answer the call.. tell them your situation depending on the age of the debt it is best to see if a settelment is available and see if you can then get tehm to split that settlement into 2 or 3 parts...But as for the calls you are probably on an auto dialer and it will call and call and call till you pick up.. if you want the calls to stop permantly pick up the phone ask their name and company write it down tell them to cease and desist contact and to only send you letters and then give them your address...................

they never stop calling.

No, they will continue to call, or start mailing you. After awhile though, probably after 4-5 months, the letters will stop coming. But expect to go to court.

Who doesn't have a caller ID? Anyways, they wil keep calling and calling. If you going to pay them just tell them. If you keep ignoring their phone call; they will send it to a credit bureau. They might even try to sue you.

I've been there, done that. if you are having trouble, you can contact company like http://www.consumercredit.com/ that will play middle man between you and your collectors.

Avoiding the problem will only make it worse. If you avoid them they will be more persistent and nasty, but if you explain your problem, and try to make small good faith payments they might forgive extra finance charges. the old saying goes, you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

Good luck!

Have you considered a change of telephone number?

they will give up after awhile, but the first time you apply for ANY credit (card, car loan, home loan) they will track you down VERY quickly and if you dont take care of the bill, then you will probably go to court. best bet, if you have to, go with a debt consoldation place that can work out payments for you and get you out of trouble. keep in mind, ignoring a problem doesnt make it go away.

they may stop calling eventually if you don't answer. However, the letters will begin, and if you still ignore them. expect to receive a summons to appear in court.

The best thing to do is to talk to them and make payment arrangements.

Bill collectors are like the Terminator. They'll never stop. Best to face the situation and deal with it like a responsible adult.

No they will keep calling. Answer the phone and tell them that particular person is not at your number. they might stop calling but not in all cases. You can always send them a cease and desist letter if it's not the original creditor.

They will keep calling. They are still calling concerning my deceased husbands account (that he had before we got married and paid on until his death and no my name was not on the account) even though I have told them he is no longer living. Now the letters are coming and saying "to the estate of------ or anyone who wants to pay this account". I'm just letting them leave messages on my machine and I shred the letters...Maybe someday they will get the hint...
