If I get married and I discover that my wife has $8000?
credit card debt, am I responsible for her debt if the credit card
company decides to bring it to court? If so, that seems very
unfair. Any suggestions?

You aren't personally responsible for any debt she incurred in her own name, before or after your marriage.

If you obtain credit, car loans, or mortgages jointly, you're responsible.

I would just support her in making better decisions for your future together, and let her know that you will stand by her and help her through it but that it is her responsibility to pay it back.

any contribution on your part should be minimal because she has to learn from her mistakes. I am sure you don't want her to ruin your credit to and trust me when I say I know from experience.

Not legally. But I know that you will help her get rid of that debt. Because as soon as you married her, you began to share everything with her. For richer or poorer right?

Dorothy
No.

do you remember your vows? for better or worse.. well that must be what they mean by the worse. is the rest of it for the better. if so you should feel lucky.. there could have been more than that... count your blessings..

You are not morally responsible and if you want to fight this in court you will be released of the responsibility. What will this do to your marriage if you decide to do that? Will it make it better or will it show your wife you are keeping tabs?

It may not have been the most honest thing she did, but what is done is done.

Regardless the date you were married, if you were added the ANY of the credit cards, then Yes you are financially responsible for her debt also.
BUT.
if you were not added to her cards, then no you are not financially responsible, REGARDLESS if your married or not, marriage does not bind credit reports nor scores, they will only list that you are married, if even that, but it will not affect you in any way shape or form.

You know the vows you took....so get to work repairing y'alls credit. My wife and I learned how to repair my credit from http://www.mycreditadvise.com what we learned from there really helped us.

I think you are only responsible for debt incurred after the date of the marriage. The card purchases after this date may or may not be your shared responsibility. They know if she bought perfume or a new couch. You take pretty much 50/50 for all debt or assets incurred as the ink dried on the license.

depends on the state you live in. here yes. they'll come after you. AND if she has kids, she could (believe it or not) sue YOU for child support for those kids too!!!! even though they're not yours. i couldn't believe it either, but it has happened. lol and it can happen both ways. YEP SAD BUT TRUE!!! kid you not. that's why i wouldn't date or marry a guy with kids. nope don't need baggage. but now, you could fight it in court by getting an annulment and arguing that you didn't know she had all this debt. kind of bogus not letting you know everything before getting you down the isle. not a good way to start out.

If after marriage, she put your name on that account too - yes, you will be. I have a friends, she got married and her husband added her name to his account (credit card). She automatically went to bad credit because that acount was delayed.

Tell your fiancee that she should pay off her debt before you get married. Once you get married, you are both responsible.

Pay it off and you'll make her a very happy woman.
