Coty B | If I payed at least $5 on the two credit cards I have in collections would it help or hurt the card? |
I have two credit cards in collections that I am trying SO hard to pay off. I want no debt! A lady suggested that even if I pay $5 it's still a payment, and they can't do anything more. Is that true?
Is it worth paying even $5 a month, or would the money end up just going no-where. (like would just be a waste?) |

don't trust them they say that but your % keeps going up each day and month so you are just thrown your $5 away in the wind most likely they are going to take you to court and sue for the debts so watch them |

If the accounts have already gone into collections, that means the original creditor sold the debt.
You can pay something, but if you do, then you will reset the clock on your states SOL. (statute of limitations) which means they can take you to court to collect or garnish your wages
First consider how old are these debts, are they beyond your states SOL (you can find that info here: http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/SOL-by-State.html
If the debts are time barred, then find out your rights at this web site http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/alerts/timebaralrt.pdf
Information on time barred debts.
What is the finance charges they are getting, that $5.00 payment could go on for years and years untill the debt is settled. Many people have gotten suckered in with that statement, we can't do anything more, only to later find a letter from a law firm demanding full payment!!
Tell them you want it in writing!!! that the payments will not increase, and that they will not pursue any further action and once the ballance is paid, you want the derogatory entry in your credit report removed. Also, DO NOT discuss anything on the phone, do it all in writing to protect yourself. That way you have documentation.
I invite you to join the following Yahoo group "DontGetRippedOff" dedicated to helping those in financial trouble, Here you will find information to help you with debt collection agencies.

I know from experience that even a five dollar payment is still considered a "payment" and a collection agency will work with you if you are trying to make payments at all. The last thing you want is for collections to see that you have "stopped making payments"
My advice is to pay the most you can, and let the collections department see that you are doing what you can. |

DO NOT "DO NOTHING"! You need to show good faith in trying to pay off the cards. I would call them up and ask if there is any way to work out a payment plan that you can handle. Unless it's an enormous amount of money, they are not going to progress further if you are making regular payments. They may still ding your credit record, but that has probably already happened. |

to your first question, yes what she had said to you is true. as far as your second question goes we would all need much more information from you as to answer intelligently. however there are debt consolidation/debt counseling companies out there that can help you learn about credit, and the importance of having credit. your situation might prove their service valuable and you may meet someone who can show you good decision making skills concerning your credit file and score. cosolidating your debt and addressing this issue right away will be your best move to control whatever damage you have already done to your credit file. |

It wouldn't hurt, but it won't help either. Depending on the amount of the debt, $5 might only pay the interest which means the balance is still there. Find out what the interest is and then pay $5 more than the interest. Its not much but it should slowly pay off your debt. |

What would be worth your time is contacting the cc companies and working out a payment plan. More importantly, you've got to knuckle down and put some real amounts towards your debts. $5 a month just isn't cutting it and suggests you aren't being disciplined with your spending. You need to start living on a budget that allows for substantial payments on your debts.
Try Dave Ramsey's plan - it really works well! |

Any credit sent to collections will hurt your credit.
Paying $5.00 a month (if that is the minimum) will keep you at bay. Its a waste. Its basically making $5 payments to keep you away from going to court.
Make the minimum payment on one of the cards. And put as much as possible on the one with the lowest balance until its paid off. |

Yes pay $5.00 per month if that is all you can afford! If it's at a collection agency they are NOT adding interest to it (as one of the answers here says). It may take a long time to pay it off but you will eventually have a zero balance. When you send the payment in put a note in with it explaining that this is all you can do, but you will do it each month- then make sure you follow through. Credit is very important to our futures- people who don't pay their bills end up paying much more in interest rates on cars/homes etc. due to poor credit.
Good luck! |
