ilovethe90s | If an overdue account is sent to collections, how long before it's on my credit report? I was told 2-3 mths... |
I had three cell phone lines with Sprint that I decided to cancel because Sprint's customer service is the worst. Anyway, since I did it before the contract expired, I'm being charged the early termination fee, something I was well aware of. I had some unexpected bills come up, and I called Sprint to make payment arrangements for $100 every two weeks, which I think is a pretty decent arrangement, but they want me to pay in full by Apr 14 or else my account will be sent to collections, exactly what I was trying to avoid. I was told by five Sprint reps and 'supervisors' no payment arrangements could be made because my account was cancelled, and even if there is intent to pay, the account will be sent to collections if not paid in full by Apr 14. The last rep I spoke to told me the same thing, but he said I shouldn't worry because after being sent to collections, I had until Jun 9 before it appeared on my credit report. I'm so confused-is this true? Are there any other options? Thank you. |

Your best bet is to pay them off in full some way. You do not want it to go to collections. Once it has been turned over to a collection agency it is allready too late to avoid it being reported on your credit report where it will remain for the time period as prescribed by the CRA's which is 7 ½ years (7 years plus 180 days) from the date (month and year) of the last delinquency (known as "last missed payment:).
Once Sprint reports the account as being in collections status, it hits your credit report as a negative entry no matter what time frame they may use to report to CRA's it will be there on your report.
Forget all the answers that say you can file a dispute or request a verification of the debt. This practice is only used to prove that a debt is time barred or beyond the state and CRA statute of limitations.
This will become a "new" debt and no matter what, even if you pay the collections agency, it will still be on your report.
Pay Sprint the full amount NOW to save your credit score. |

If the account is sent to collections it will be reported to the bureaus in short order.
Your options include disputing the collection to the bureaus and making Sprint validate the debt. Because the law is geared in favor of the consumer, Sprint will have a limited amount of time to provide the Bureaus with the proper evidence to validate the accuracy of the original debt. If you have paid the late fees by the time the Bureaus ask Sprint for validation, Sprint may simply not respond as they have no financial incentive for doing so.
The site below can help you better understand how to dispute this if it shows upo on your credit report. |

If your credit is in good standing condition i would not mess with it. Rather apply for a credit card and pay them in full since there are cards with zero interest for few months, then get your credit screwed up. and yes i am very familiar with SPRINT customer service. ( its going downhill big time)
Did you have security deposit with sprint when you activated your lines because you can use it toward cancellation fee.? |

Send your $100 to Sprint every two weeks. They may actually hold off turning your accout to collections if you are making the payments. Hopefully, you balance is just the early term fees and the two or three payments you will make by Apr 14 will pay off most of those fees. Sprint doesn't want to string out a long payment plan for a closed account.
If it does go to collections and show up on your credit report, defintely get a written agreement from the collection agency to remove the negative item for payment. |

It can appear on your report the day it goes to collection, or months later. That is upto the collection agency.
WHat you COULD do is make payments as you see fit. If a collection agency calls you, get anything in writing. Meaning, if you say "I will pay you by this date, then delete it" and they say "OK", tell them to send it in writing.
THEN, make the payment, and they have to delete it from your credit report. How much is your termination fee? It's usually X amount of dollars per month left on the contract to a MAXIMUM of Y amount |

Each agency does thing a bit differently. Generally when an account has been placed with a collection agency you have thirty days to dispute the debt and most agencies will wait to report the debt until after this thirty day period. |

Usually within the first month, if not before. If it is far enough behind to go into collections, it could very well already be on your credit report.
When it is sold or outsourced to a collection agency, they will allow you to make payments, but it will really lower your score until the account is paid in full. |

You will have at a minumum of 30 days from the day you receive the letter from the collection to respond before they can put it on your CR. I would advise to dispute this. You can find sample letters for dispute at creditboards.com. It is a free forum that also has a ton of other info about credit repair and the dispute process. You might even be able to settle the dispute for a lesser amount. You can also set a payment plan up with the collection agency and they will not put it on your report.
