They will usually require payment in full to cancel the account. Shred it, work on paying off the account and cancel it. The sooner you pay it off the better for your credit score. |

You absolutely DO NOT have to pay the balance when you “cancel” your credit card- if it’s a “revolving” account.
How can you tell it’s a revolving account you ask? Well, simple; Do you make minimum payments towards the account each month? If yes than you have a revolving credit account; this allows you to revolve or carry a balance month to month and stretch payments over a period of time.
If so than you can close your account for purchases (and it will reflect on your credit that YOU chose to close it). It will however, still be assessed fees (if you pay late or go over the credit line) and accrue interest on the remaining balance each billing cycle until paid in full.
This is no different than keeping it open and paying your monthly payments except you will no longer have access to the purchasing power on the card for the open credit (the amount you have paid down compared to the credit line).
If you do pay in full, call the company can calculate what your balance will be with any interest charges by the date you plan to make the payment. |

yes. If you dont want to pay it right away, stop using it until you pay off the whole thing and then cancel it, cut it into 16 pieces. |

Not necessarily. Most let you continue to make the usual monthly payments until your balance is zero.
**If you DO decide to pay it off all at once, call the company first and ask for the total payoff amount. This is usually a little bit more than your balance. Otherwise, they may continue to charge additional minor fees that tend to add up quickly.
Good Luck! |

no, just call them and tell them you want to freeze your account, so they can't keep upping your limit, and no charges can be made. |

not immediately, but it depends on the lender, some like to be paid in full ASAP, other give you a plan |

If you are trying to improve your credit, don't cancel the card. Cut it up or otherwise destroy it. Pay it off. A zero balance on the card looks better than cancelled, if it it's at your request. |
