Only if you tell them specifically not to call your number. Legally they can only call to find out the contact information of the person they're trying to reach, and nothing else..
Check out the "Fair Debt Collections Practices Act." (FDCPA)
If you feel they are in violation of the guidelines you can contact the FTC, BBB, and your states attorney general's office for complaint.
Oh and next time you get this person on the phone, pretend that you're going to record the conversation....
Say " I want you to know for my records that I will be recording this conversation".... and see the reaction you'll get :-)

Next time it happens, ask to speak to the supervisor. Make it very clear to them that they are to stop calling and you have already requested it to stop, and if it continues, you are going to log the date and time of each call and report them for being in violation of the fair debt collection act. |

Debt collectors are not allowed to harass you.
You can document and tape the harassment then sue for up to 1% of the companies net worth.
You must tell them in writing that you do not wish to be contacted by phone. |

The Consumer's Protection Bureau will take care of those annoying collectors! The LAW - cannot call you after you have informed them! If they persist, ask for their name,the company,the telephone number. Ask the "collection" agency for their Registration numbers - to be a licenced collection company, they must be legally certified,and monitored by the State,Province,and Federal Government. Stand up for your rights and report them, tell them you are reporting them and DO IT. The bottom line, they will LOOSE their licence. Write everything down that you can remember, when they called, what time, what they said to you and GO FOR IT. I dislike these guys so much.PS - everything I have told you I did, and that's how I know.Good Luck, and be more careful who you share your life with... |

this is harrasment and it can be stopped....check with a lawyer and pursue it if you have to....go for contingency...the lawyer gets half of what he can and will bust butt to get all the money out of them he can...good luck.... |

When you answer the phone first say "hello."
When the caller asks for your roommate, ask who is calling and from what company. They MUST tell you.
Keep a record this information. You will be able to use it against them.

It is illegal for them to call if you simply tell them that they are required to cease and desist all telephone calls to that number. Some creditors require a written notice before they will comply, but a verbal request is adequate under the law. This is a right granted by the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). |

by law if you tell them to stop calling they have to stop calling, that includes at home and the work place, but if you can give them his new address and phone number |

Notify the caller that the person they are trying to reach no longer lives there and tell them not to call anymore. If they continue to call, speak with a supervisor and tell them to stop calling that the person no longer lives at this address. If the phone is in your name, the call should stop. |
