My Wife freaks out when i throw out old receipts with our credit card number on them, but I tell her they would need our full name and exp date to actually do anything with it. Is she paranoid, or am I right? |

In the US, if someone steals your credit card number and uses it, you are not responsible for more than $50. Most credit card companies lower this to $0.
However, it's a real pain to have to fight the charges.
To answer your question: it's possible to use a credit card number without a full name and expiration date. Harder these days, but there are still merchants that will accept just the number and don't bother to check to see that the name/expiration date matches. |

Somehow hackers can find out the missing numbers. They have their ways. So, it is you that is paranoid. I would shred everything that I bought with my credit cards. |

Sir If I was you I would listen to your wife. Any information they get your phone number, social security, mailing address, account numbers is more than to much.
I had a what I thought was a gf and she went so far as changing my address and that remains on my Credit report yet today and that was 11 years ago.
Shred and burn everything... |

Dont worry, all store credit card receipts today only print 4 digits of your credit card number. Show your wife the receipt, and were the number has all xxxx until the last 4 digits. |

Identity thieves are everywhere. Please shred any info that you don't want anyone else using. It's better safe than trying to clear things with your credit card company that it wasn't you making all those charges. It's also very costly to clear things off your credit report once someone takes your identity. |

Never EVER throw out personal info such as this. With that card number they can make duplicate cards.. and have one heck of a ball at YOUR expense.
Listen to the wife.. Even though by law your only liable for the first $50.00, you have to report the card missing or stolen FIRST.. think of all the fun they can have before that happens.....
Also,.. if they are going through the trash to get that number.. what other personal info things have you tossed in there.. I am sure something with your full name on it... It's only a hop skip and a jump to full identity theft at that point... |

I once worked for a store where one of the clerks was caught manually typing in the credit card numbers off of old receipts, and creating fake purchases. The woman had friends helping her out in other stores so that the fake purchases were spread out. One of her victims was hit for over $4000 inside of a month. What got her caught you ask, well it was the quarterly inventory. When the numbers started being way off the manager, assistant manager, and I went back through receipts for key items that were way off. So yes your wife has good reason to be paranoid. Get a shredder, they are cheap for the peace of mind. |
