You need to put a fraud alert out with all three credit reporting agencies. You only have to notify one, and they will notify the others. In the mean time, start collecting your evidence (especially if you know who it is) and present this to the police. There is a sort of clearing house # you can call which is 877-ID-Theft, but I would suggest calling the reporting agency itself to get the fraud alert posted. Their numbers are:
Equifax 1-888-766-0008
Experian 1-888-397-3742
Trans Union 1-800-680-7289
These are the numbers to their consumer fraud departments. I would then suggest that you obtain a credit report from all three agencies. What shows up on one report may not show up on all three. Before doing this though, I would have copies of your drivers license, social security card, and her birth certificate, to prove that you are who you say you are. You will probably need to fax these to them before they will take any action. Once the fraud alert is placed on her report, they are supposed to call you when any applications for credit are processed, although they are not bound by law to do so. Monitor her reports closely.
You can also apply with the social security admin. to have a new SS# applied to her name, esentially making the old one no longer usable. But I do not know the process or time that this would take. Good Luck

file a police report and send a copy and request to ALL three agencies to freeze her credit....that will at least stop future activity (at least for a while)

Then its up to you to clean up the mess.....get a good file and stapler cuz you'll have to document and keep records of all your efforts for a long time.
