If someone puts me on their credit card as a authorized user how does it improve my credit without my ss#?

To be honest, I'm unsure of how it affects your credit without your social security number. I do know, however, that some credit card companies do require the social security number of the authorized user; I assume it's for the purpose of credit reporting. It's very possible that the credit cards that do not require a social security number for the authorized user simply do not report to the bureau's. Again, this is just my educated guess.

I know from personal experience (good and bad) along with various financial websites (which I will list in the source box) that being an authorized user DOES affect your credit. If the main account holder is late on a payment, that late payment shows up as a negative mark on your credit.

In the same respect, if the account holder has a large credit line and a really good payment history, this helps the authorized user.

Apparently it's a big misconception (looking at the other answers) that being an authorized user does not affect the score. For more information, you can check out the websites I have listed in the source box.

All of these answers are false. When you are put on a person's card as an authorized user you will pick up all of that persons history on that card. If that person has a clean pay history you will benefit because that will show up on your credit report. If you speak with anyone who does credit repair they will tell you to find someone with good credit and ask them to authorize you on their credit cards to improve your score. You will need to give your social security number in order for the history to show up on your credit.

~~It doesn't. You have to be a responsible party on the credit card and give your social security number to have a credit advantage. Otherwise you are an additional card holder authorized to make charges.~~

Who knows? But I wouldn't let them do it.

Recent personal experience...it DOESN'T. According to the credit card companies, your credit is only improved if you are a secondary on the card. Simply being able to sign/use a card does not make you responsible for paying the bill; only the primary person is responsible so only their credit is affected. As a secondary cardholder you become responsible, also, and then your information is reported.

It does not improve your credit at all because you are not responsible in any way for the charges on the card.

It doesnt improve your credit history at all.. Actually its all goes to the primary card holder

Better get a SS #.That way you get your money you payed into later.

Anjell
It doesn't improve your credit because you're simply allowed to use it (hence authorized user) and nothing more. You are not a card or account holder.

Being added as an authorized user does nothing for your credit rating. It just gives you permission to use the card.

In order for it to effect your credit rating, you would have to be the co-owner of the account which is done when the account is originally opened.
