If you found out that a credit card issuer made a huge mistake that worked to your advantage would you?
take the money and run or let them know? Does the company have any recourse to reclaim their money if they find the mistake? Think about how much money you're giving the card companies before you answer.
Additional Details
I talked to my credit card company on the phone, it turns out it was finance charges refunded because my consolidation company negotiated a deal with them, but I didn't get a clear explanation from the CSR, but I feel better that they know about what happened, so even if they find a mistake, they can't say I didn't talk with them about it, so I still get the money without a guilty conscience. Thanks all and I'll pick a best answer sometime soon.

This has happened to me before and I was honest about it. A friend of mine didn't say anything and he had to pay back, ( Their Mistake!!! ). Banks and financial companies have teams of people that do just that. They are constantly checking for mistake after mistake, and if it doesn't add up then they start looking and checking to see who made the mistake and how to correct it. I hope this has helped. The girl above me wrote the same thing almost, so maybe it would be a good idea to pay it.

They can absolutely fix mistakes. I had my debit card charge me $20 out of nowhere becuase for some reason a charge never went through fo rlike 6 months. They sent me a notice but i received it in the mail AFTER they had already taken their money! gah.

sorry but i would keep it

I would tell them about it. Whatever I am or not, I am honest. If I did something, I would feel like I deserved something negative because of it, even if I knew I wouldn't get caught. Someone I know didn't get billed some vacation charges about 10 years ago. She told me the cc company had some big problem with their data. As for companies now days finding mistakes? Yeah, they probably will, but I don't see how they can come after you for fraud for their mistake. Some people charge things, and don't even keep track, so might truthfully not even know they weren't billed, unless it were really big or obvious.

conundrum_dragon
I would let them know, only because if they did find out they probally would and could charge me with some kind of crime.

Mum is the word, sit around a while and see what happens, yes they can re-bill if they catch up with it. Stop using the card if it is enough money, move, no forward !

gosh.. a question about honesty and integrity. I am a pretty good person, but I would be terribly tempted to run with the money, but I KNOW that I would always be watching my back, afraid that at any moment that I would be caught, so in truth I would notify the bank just so I woudn't have the fear of getting busted! And I have good morals and standards! lol

Don't tell them, but don't take advantage of it, either. Sooner or later, they'll find and correct the mistake.

MBNA made some mistakes($1000s worth) in my favor, but they eventually fixed it.

Dave
Might as well come clean. They will figure it out eventually and come after you.

They would eventually figure it out (maybe when the do and audit) and maybe file theft charges or something . I would think it would just save a lot of worries to just not use the money it would be harder to pay back. Good luck in your decision making.

This actually happened to a friend of mine. REALLY. Her credit card company made a mistake of about $5,000.00. She kept it. Sure enough, they figured it out and did everything but send her to jail. They cut up her card, ruined her credit. This happened over Christmas last year...

Don't keep it! It isn't worth it! It isn't YOURS!

F@#k Em Keep It cancel the card get statement that account is satisfied and your done. Although make sure they say the account is satisfied completely unless it has to do with limits then you are still going to have to pay the amounts you charge. Need more info.

?
TAKE THE MONEY

I would let them know. It's called fraud if you know something isn't yours and you take it anyway! Is it worth it? No.
