Additional Details
before you start slagging me off as some of you are doing, the debt was not my fault, it was through a car crash i had which wasent my fault and the insurance dident pay off the full finance which left me with a £1000 to pay and i was in hospital from the crash and lost my job because of it

see the site below for statute-barred debts, note especially the limitations that apply.

You are still responsible for that debt...it's amazing you've got away with it for so long

Absolutely. It will stay as a black mark on your credit rating until you do. They could also choose to take legal action against you. Get some advice from a debt counselling service.

MADMARY
I don't know about legally, but morally, the debt is yours, pay it.

Typically, negative marks on your credit should automatically be removed after 7 to 10 years. Go to www.equifax.com for more details

Well you owe it so i would say so. Get legal advice or citizens advice is free....

Why would you even ask? You created the debt, you're obligated to pay the debt.
That's the problem with American society today... everyone wants something for free... everyone only cares about themselves...
How about being a productive member of society and not a leech?

I thought that after 6 years, they have to write the debt off.

Are you sure its actually 6.5 years, it might be just before the 6 years, and they are having one last go to get the money before they lose it. Dont fall for their scare tactics though, if you cant afford to pay it back in full, they cant force you.

Best check with Citizens Advice or something.

heleneaustin
Legally the company only have 6yrs to recoup it from you then it is legally written off....so no you do not have to pay it especially if you are not being pursued. If they have continually pursued you then i think you do have to pay it but ask at your local law society or CAB to be doubly sure.
Good luck

Pay it! if you can't afford to pay it in full get debt counselling and negotiate a repayment plan. Whether or not you are legally obliged to you have incurred this debt and are honour bound to pay it.

?????
Not too sure , the citizens advice will be able to tell you. But for your future credit record you should pay it if you can, if not see if you can come to some kind of payment plan with them.

Well why didn't you put all the info up before? People can only judge on what you first said. Now I advise you to go and see a lawyer to get this sorted out, taking all relevent paperwork with you.

Why didn't you say that before, you must have realised that people weren't going to respond kindly to someone asking whether they can get away with not paying a debt after 8 years?

Knowing what I know now, I have taken my original comment off- but next time consider giving all the details in the first place, before emailing people abuse after they misunderstand.
