dora | If you have alot of open accts on your credit report, is it wise to close the accts? |
I know you still have to pay the closed accts off if they have balances. |

When you have a lot of open accounts it might give companies a reason that sooner or later you are going to start using those open lines of credit, which might lead you to default on future payments. Hence, future chargeoffs and bankruptcies issues which no company wants any of or willing to take a risk on. I suggest you close the most recent ones and keep a couple of the(oldest accounts) open so as to build and establish a history of credit for those most important purchases such as a car, house, etc. Good luck!!!! |

Only if you ahve excessive accounts. Even then, you only want to close more recent accounts-- not old ones-- beucase history is important. |

if you have many open accts. consider closing 1 every 3 months or so.
closing accounts lowers your overall credit available and therefore puts you at a higher risk.
ex: you have 10 accts with 5k line on each. total 50 k.you have 3k used on each, total 30 k owed. you close 5 accts that you no longer use and have now have 30k owed and available only 10 k. whereas before you had 20 k available. your balances to available credit are too high.
some companies will also look at it as you owe 30 k and only have 25 k credit line(since the other accts are closed). that looks real bad.
closing accts over an extended period shows a gradual change and your balances are also getting paid down.
even if you don't carry any balances your total credit available has shrunk. companies are likely to give you as much credit as the next.that's why we get so many credit card offers in the mail, online etc...companies want the rewards but not the risk.
only time to close accts at once is as a condition of a mortgage(at this point it doesn't matter since the bank has committed to lend you the money if you do).also, when consolidating bills closing makes sense since you want less bills anyway and only do after loan approval. then only keep 1 or 2 you truly need, preferably the oldest. |

Closed accounts should be taken off. |

Consumer advocate Clark Howard advises against closing accounts. It has something to do with your ratio of available credit to your outstanding credit balance.
I did close one credit account last year in a fit of anger. A recent check of my credit rating showed that it had no adverse affect. |

pay them and as they are paid then close them ... closing the accounts while they still have a balance is not as good for your credit score as paying then ending the account ....... |

That's a maybe based on what you are planning on doing in the future. To many open account when trying to buy a home is not good. To few accounts when applying for credit cards...etc... is not good. Kind of 6 to one half-dozen to the other. |

well, too much open credit does adversely affect your credit score. pretty much everything does. |

If they have balances it will make your credit score go down because your balance to credit ratio will increase.
Closed accounts still stay on your report for 7 years after the date of closing. If they are paid off, then close them. |
