If you owned a Dollar Store - would you hire someone with bad credit?
Someone that has a car about to be repossed if they don't make the payment?
Someone that has bill collectors after them?
Legally, I would have a right to check their credit reports, but would hire them to give them a chance?

i believe that everyone deserves a second chance. i believe that there are a lot of people out there that are hurting and in financial trouble. they aren't all lazy, irresponsible, etc. as some would have you believe. however, when it comes to your business and your family's livelihood, you shouldn't take unnecessary chances. being that the issues are recent and unresolved and it's your business and money at stake, i would say no. the person might be great, but you might want to choose another candidate. those that have money problems tend to be a lot more temptation and incentive to lift from the till.

Not if the problems are recent and unresolved.
People who don't have the skills to manage their money generally don't have the personal discipline to be a good employee.

Where do I start? Ok, here goes..... Just because someone has bad credit does not necessarily mean they have bad character. It could mean they have no money. If you have never been in a situation where you pick feeding your children over paying a bill, then you are lucky. I have been in this situation, and worked hard to get where I am now, but I never stole anything, or lied or cheated, I just took the hits as they came, worked 100 hours a week, and held it together. I was loyal to my employer, but did not allow them to take advantage of me. And seriously, no disrespect, but it's a Dollar store. Those jobs come a dime a dozen. If they are working the register, I am sure you have procedures implemented to track cash, credit cards, etc.If they are stocking, then how could they steal your inventory? You have camera's, right? Keep an eye on them. Ask them questions, if they seem fidgety, not nervous, but fidgety, don't hire them

Look a lot of people are going through the exact same thing. This person need someone to give them a change to get back on there feet. Have a heart and give them that chance. :-)

You can give them a chance if you think they would be an asset to your store. During the hiring process explain to them that the till is monitored daily and that any discrepancies would not be tolerated. You could also once in a while do a mid shift check to let that person know you are serious about employee theft

That would be the first person you'd want to hire! If they're that near the edge of survival, you'll know they'll try even harder to do a good job and be there for a while. Seriously, who doesn't have bad credit now?

I agree with Brother Otter.

It isn't about just having bad credit ... it's about having RECENT and UNRESOLVED bad credit ...

Why even go through the hassle when there are 10 other applications sitting on your desk?

First off, I wouldn't bother doing a credit check on any potential employees unless they were applying for a management position, and even then it would only be a small part of my selection process.

It has been proven time and time (and time) again that a person's credit worthiness is NOT a true reflection of their character...and that's not even mentioning the fact that when the FTC did a study on consumer credit reports, an overwhelming MAJORITY contained erroneous entries bad enough to get the consumer denied for most credit.

Looking at someon's credit report is not going to tell you how well they treat customers, run the register or stock shelves. You'd be better off spending your time running criminal background checks and contacting references.
