If you were $15,000 in debt what would you do?

Simple. I'd develop a plan and stick to it. I'd create a means to successfully pay this off and, above all, stick to it. This isn't exotic algebra, it's simple math.

First, cut up any credit cards within 3 minutes of reading this email. If you won't do that, you can't be helped.

Now, you simply list your debts highest to lowest. You pay the minimum on all but the smallest and pay the smallest off first. As you pay the smallest off, roll that amount up to pay the next smallest, and so on until they are all paid.

You may need a second or third job. You may need to sell stuff. You WILL need to change your behavior and your thinking about money and debt.

You've ignored the whole concept of a budget, knowing where your money WILL go before you get it. And you've ignore the concept of living within your means.

Take a second job and put all the income from it directly to the credit card.

My husband and I have nearly $100,000 in credit card and revolving debt. We have been trying to save our small screw maching company.

So, as I was paying a little more than the minimum on everything, I was getting no where. I took our highest interest card and started putting all the extra towards it. Then I took the entire payment plus the minimum payment on the next highest, and paid if off. Been working down the line.

Doing it this way we reduced our interest debt by hundreds and we are actually seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Unless the economy gets any worse (and it will).

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

good luck

I would sit down and create a budget. Cut back on things you really don't need to be doing, like going out to dinner and buying expensive groceries. See if there is anything you can get rid of for cash. And lastly you may want to talk to a credit manager to help you out. You can consolidate and make one large payment a month to pay it off. Stop spending money on those cards. Pay cash or use your Debit card more. Cut up the cards and get serious about getting out of debt.
Good Luck!

then after call all credit companies and say you have a lump sum coming in and want to pay all your cards and what kind of deal can they make you can only pay so much on this card and they will counter offer and most of the time you can make a deal with them...start with the high ones first interest wise...and say it is a 5,000 balance and say I can only pay 3000 right now and that is it...THEY WILL take it...just takes patience and story telling on your half

This can mean many things relative to your income and the cost of living in your area....

If you are have good credit....try to get a new card that offers either a zero (or very low) percent balance transfer.....This can help A LOT in paying down debt.

If you are struggling and you have bad credit....you can always try CCCS...they may be able to reduce your interest rates.

Consolidate my debts ... start paying 'em off before I'm BURIED in interest charges.

It depends a lot on what assets and income you have. Assuming this is a relatively overwhelming sum for you, the first thing to do is to draw up a plan to pay it off from the income and assets you do have. If the $15,000 is made up of several debts, especially high interest consumer or credit card loans, it may make sense to consolidate them into one as you may be able to lower the average interest rate that way. Talk to your bank about that sort of loan and be cautious about firms that advertise themselves as debt consolidators. Some are fine, but many are dodgy. If you do consolidate, you pay off all the other loans with the money you borrow. If you can't consolidate, then talk to each of the companies to which you are in debt about working out a repayment schedule. They will prefer to talk than default. You may have assets you can sell to raise cash to pay down some or all of your loans. And look carefully at your expenditures to make sure you are not wastefully spending cash that could otherwise be used to pay down you debts -- and of course don't run up new debts by living beyond your means.

I'm close but it's my husband's credit card debt before we were married. I've gotten a lot of it paid off. It takes discipline and a plan. Pay as much as you can. Concentrate on paying the smaller balances off first. Make larger payments to those credit cards but go above and beyond the minimum payment for all credit card balances. Money will be tight until these are down but you will be much better off. Never get in this situation again.

Learn to distinguish between needs and wants. You have to live within your means. I know how hard it is to do that.
I'm cutting corners just like businesses do.

spend 15000 more, say thats life, spend it or lose it, and hijack it to canada

prodigychild_21
I pray this is not credit card debt. But I am in debt any way $124,000 est. (mortgage, student loans, car) but my debt is controllable so you must be talking about credit card debt and I dont have that, but know what it feels like because of what my mother did with my credit cards back in college. I would find a credit counseling agency asap.

That's only your credit card debt? Wow! My husband and I have two credit cards...one has a $23000 limit and a $0 balance and the other has a $16000 limit and a $800 balance...we don't use credit except in the most emergent situations...and we pay more than the monthly payment each month...if we don't have the cash for it we don't need it...

My advice would be, if you have good credit, to get a debt consolidation loan through your bank and make double payments each month and get it paid off....close all credit card accts except for 1 or 2 major credit cards like Visa, MC....and stop spending what you don't have!!!
