Oh, Cari, (answerer above) you are so silly. If he declares himself bankrupt then the rest of us have to pay for his overspending and I dont want to do that - bankrupcy used to be a stigma but not any more apparantly.
Well, 10k in debt isnt a huge amount to pay back. Over 2 years that would be £500 a month or £100 a week. I would write to the people you owe money to ans explain that you are struggling topay them back at hte moment and ask them if they have any longer term repaymeny plans. Slightly lower interest rates but last longer (and you end up paying more in the end)
Now to pay it back yuo can do a few things, cut down on your spending is one (Im not sure what you spend but for example, if you go to the pub on a friday night, offer to drive and get your friends to pay your petrol, and buy the dribver soft drinks all night (everyone is a winner - you dont pay for drinks and a taxi, your friends get a lift home at the end of the night, you feel OK in the morning and save £50! Thats half of the £100 you need to pay back a week to pay off your debt in 2 years, as an example) Other cut backs could include things like new clothes - make sure you are well dressed but consider if you really need a new pair of shoes for example before you buy them - another £100 saved!).
You could get a part time job, doing something you enjoy (for example, if you goto to the gym, you could work there a couple of nights a week, get free membership (save £30 a month) and get paid - could get £50 a week)
You could sell things - OK you arnt going to get lots for second hand stuff but you might grt some to help make a start. A good way yo declutter your life at the same time.
So there are a couple of suggestions for you.
If you need any more then the citizens advise beurau specialises in debt advice - go and ask them as well |

Consider an IVA this is an Individual voluntary agreement. The process is similar but not quite as drastic as Bankruptcy. Contact the local,CAB office and you will recieve help. In the meantime just pay the interest in your debts. |

Well you may well get people posting adverts for loans in response to this but your best bet is to see the citizens advice bureau who will negotiate with the people you owe money to. |

What sort of debt? Is it spread out amongst different businesses? Would consolidating the loan not help you? If you are having trouble paying it back due to spiraling charges you can come to an agreement with your bank(s) to freeze the interest on the account(s). I did just that, and am now able to pay a steady amount off each month. |

Look into declaring bankruptcy. This will erase your debts BUT you need to make yourself fully aware of the implications that this will have for the future. You will find it difficult to get any kind of credit products (including a mortgage), certainly within the next few years, but possibly even forever. It depends on how old you are, but if you're quite young this could be your best bet. |
