And the best part is, i dont owe them a dime.
They arent trying to collect money from me. They are trying to collect money from a deadbeat relative of mine. Somehow they got my name and number and keep calling me over some student loans (i think) that a cousin of mine took out years ago. (close to 15 years ago) This girl is a very irresponsible person and has said many times she has absolutely no intentions of paying anything back. Its just how her and her husband live. Its wrong-but they only pay the rent and utilities, anything else they can get by with not paying they dont. They dont give a damn about credit history or anything (i am nothing like that btw). Anyways these places keep calling me trying to get in touch with her. I have told them point blank to stop calling, that i have little or no contact with my cousin yet they still do, they call like every other day demanding her phone number. Ive given it to them, yet they still call me. What can i do?
Additional Details
I am not the guardian of the person, and did not co-sign for any loans. She is older than me, i believe she probably took these loans out when i was still in high school or maybe just graduated.
And Georgiapeachy, i am not leaving anything out. Nothing i can think of off hand. |

Inform them that you are a "disinterested third party." Unless you co-signed for anything, you have no obligation or responsibility to them. If they continue to harass you, you will secure the services of an attorney to seek legal remedies. If they continue to bother you, contact a lawyer and have him/her draft a letter and send it to the bill collectors. Their calls will dry up quick. |

You have a few choices here:
1. Change your telephone number to an unlisted one. Don't give it out to anyone, not even your mother (somehow, your cousin will get ahold of it).
2. Get the name and address of the collection agencies, and type up a "Cease and Desist" letter, stating that they are to remove your telephone number from their records. Or else you are going to sue them. And do this at the bottom: cc: atty file
3. Get the tel # of the local morgue and say "here's her number".
4. If they work anywhere, give THAT telephone # out.
Finally, the one that makes me feel the best:
5. Beat your dead beat cousin and her husband's dirty lowdown no good aces. Beat them good. |

There is a federal law listing the practices collection agencies are not allowed to use. I would hazard a guess they are violating it.

The best thing I can tell you is to get all the information on this company you can and send them a certified letter saying that you want them to quit call you..They have 30 days to remove your name for their call list... If they don't then you can file a complaint against them with the FCC...I would also check your credit and see if your cousin took anything out in your name... That could be how they found you was by skip tracing... by having anything in both names that you may not know about.... hope this helps and good luck. |

What it sounds like is she used you as a reference and they are calling you to find out her wherabouts.
The thing is, they can only call you "maybe" 3 times and that's it.
I would tell them if they don't stop calling you'll sue them for harassment...and then do it. |

Unless you are the legal guardian of this other person, you are not responsible for her debts. I have a feeling there may be ssomethign you are leaving out of the story, but if not, then merely hang up when they call, or change your phone number. Of course, if this peron is using your name and identity (and possibly a credit card in your name, or something like that) then you have big trouble. |

Ask for the company name and the # they can be reached back at for a return call. Then advise the company to be removed off the account. You can check your state law but in most states you can file a complaint against the company, even a lawsuit if they don't stop the calls. You probably will have to ask to speak to a supervisor to get your # removed off that person's account as well. It is considered harassment. |
