No, it is not true.
There are a lot of debt control services available, it would be a better idea to go to your local Citizen's Advice Bureau and get some debt counseling. Matters are rarely as bad as they seem and you may find that you can repay your debt in small amounts.
Running away to Switzerland is not an option. Under the Home Office Extradition act of 2003, UK and Switzerland have a bilateral extradition agreement, which means that you could be arrested in Switzerland and returned to the UK to face the courts. |

Yes it is true, the only way you can get stung is if you come back to England.
Remember though that unpaid debts are wiped clean after 7 years and then 6 years after they come off your credit file.

How much is not a lot? All the card companies can do is chase you. If they take you to court you'll could end up paying next to nothing a week. |

You can't run away from your conscience, if you have one. Face up to your reponsibilities. One can always sort out money problems especially if you keep your creditors informed of the situation. Unless you are the sort of person that likes to run up debts and think they can get away with not paying. The only thing you can't run away from is death. |

If it's a small debt, I think they are more likely to write it off than chase you around the world. (Unless it's the Student Loan Company!! lol)
I've been in this position a long time ago ( young and foolish?)and the bottom line is ( in UK) if you keep your head down for around six years, your debt will likely been written off and you are unlikely to be pursued. ( I was offered a credit card after only four years and my debt was BIG)
However, you really got to keep your head down, no loans, credit applications, nothing that can lead the debt collectors to you.
As you are going abroad ( for a long time?), it is very unlikely that anyone will pursue you or be waiting for you at the airport if you come back.
Please note, I am not condoning dodging a debt. I am just relating my past experience and no morality lectures!.
Before all the legal eagles have a go, I should add that I was up for filing bankruptcy. It was my brief ( lawyer, solicitor, attorney, whatever) who advised me to just ' keep my head down'.
I did and it worked. |
