Improving a poor credit score!?
I don't know my actual score, but I did the estimator and I'm guessing it is in the mid 500's.

I went to college last year and got in way over my head. I was young.. still am, but I realized how important money and credit is. I opened four credit cards last year: two store and two regular. All of them have a balance. I lived off of them all year: not smart. I know!!! Now, how long do you perceive it will take me to get my credit straightened out. I am on a payment plan and will have all of them paid off by January. Once they are all paid, i know my credit will not boost immediately, but how long should it take. I am moving into an apartment in January and want to make sure i won't need a co-signer.

I am still in college and I do have college loans out.

I just want a 650 for starters....! HELP!
Additional Details
my total cost of credit debt is:

capital one: 400 (but limit is 300)
Macys: 200(limit 500)
Ny and Co: 400 (limit 200.. ughhh.. missed may and july payment)
Chase: 900(limit 600... late fee's)

I got a new job and have steady income now....

Paying as much as I can each month now, but in January I am paying all of it off completely.

In order to improve your score, you must first know what makes up your score:

1. Payment history-35%
2. Total debt owed vs. Available credit-30%
3. Length of time establishing credit-15%
4. Types of credit established-10%
5. Inquiries and New accounts-10%

With that said, I don't have to tell you that the biggest killer to your score are the late payments. Each late payment can take a chunk out your score each time. So the Ny & Co. card dinged you up pretty good. Next, you're more than maxed on 3 cards. Like I mentioned above, that's the 2nd most important aspect of your score. So, with that in mind, my suggestion would be to tackle the overlimit accounts first, since they're doing the most damage to your score. I would pay the minimum payment on the Macy's, then the Capital One, then the rest I'd split up between Chase and Ny & Co. to get those over limit amounts down as quickly as possible. You didn't mention whether or not if the accounts were still open. It's important that if they are to get them back in good standing as soon as possible, as this is what's going to help bring up your score. Depending on how quickly you get those accounts in good standing, it may take a little longer than January before your score starts going back up. What I would do is take a 2 pronged approach. Pay all the cards off, and save a little bit here and there for a deposit. Because you just can't rely on just your credit score nowadays. So my advice would be to be patient, start paying everything off and save up to move out.

Do NOT enroll in any actual credit program. Future lenders will see that as a weakness not a strength, even if it's being sold to you as help.

Once your credit cards are at 30% or less of balance owed versus available balance, your score will be at its highest.

You should pay off the "store cards", cut them up and never use them again. The interest rates are so high that once you build your credit, you'll have plenty of offers for Visa or Amex and can use those cards at the stores of your choice for at least 15% lower interest.

I'm in the credit business and would be happy to assist you with any other concerns.

.
Pay off as many of the cards as you can. Pay off the smallest balance first and cut up the card. DO NOT CANCEL IT. That destroys credit rating, too. Pay off as many as you can and keep the one that will spend anywhere. Your credit will increase substancially. NO CREDIT REPAIR. Your score will decrease.

you are 100 over capital one and 300 over limit on your
Chase. I seriously would contact a Consumer Law Lawyer
many many credit cards are being sued for excessive
fees and over the limit fees !!!!! Your score will improve
after you pay them off and fall off your report in 7 years.

start paying off the lowest bal 1st...anytime you have a few extra dollars, (even if its just 20.00).. pay a credit card bill... it works, im in a similar situration..have 3 cars (almost at the max) and a 3000 personal loan.. dont close the card after you've paid it off, (UNLESS, it has a monthly maintenance fee, then you're just giving away money).. and once you've paid the card off, cut it up, or put it away in a show box until you get some self control and a steady income

Steps to fix your credit

Consolidate your credit, so your not paying interest and it's in 1 bill
Pay your bills on time, it's okay to have a balance but paying on time is key.
having a co-signer on a loan app makes your credit go up if you pay it or if they pay it but it goes down vice-versa

just don't over expend yourself, and have a reasonable debt to income ratio (how much you spend to how much you make) and pay bills on time and you'll be fine. fixing it now will lead to better credit decisions in the future

It sounds like you are doing the right thing now, given that you got in over your head. Remember, it may take 30 to 60 days after you have paid off a debt for that information to show up in your credit reports. There is no magic way to rapidly boost your score, but you are on the right track. Stay with it.

easy, once they are all payed keep one of the credit cards, cut up the store cards and other credit card, make small purchases on your card,40-50 dollars and pay it immediately, keep doing this for a few months, make sure you have the money to pay it the next day after the purchase, your credit will build fast.

Right before you go to get the approval on your apartment, go online and dispute anything having a negative outcome on your credit. This will temporarily erase all of those items and boost your score for a short time frame. This is only temporary, but at least you'll be able to get into your own place without a co-signer.
