Cindy A | Is Capital one a good credit card to start with? |
I want a credit card for just emergencies and I have a good steady job. If capital one is not good what is a good credit card to start with? |

To all those people who just said don't use credit cards, it's a matter of self-control. Just because YOU can't handle a credit card, does not mean that no one else can.
My parents have had credit cards since they've been teenagers, and have never missed a payment. I've had a credit card since I got a job when I was 17, and I've paid all my bills in full, on time, every time.
Needless to say that I work in a cell center making $10/hour, I certainly don't have an endless amount of money that I can pay my bills off with. I just budget. I don't like carrying around a lot of cash with me, and the credit card works perfectly. Just know that you are responsible for paying for whatever you purchase.
If your planning on making all your payments on time, it doesn't matter what the interest rate is, however common sense says that if something does come up (life happens), the lower the interest rate the better.
Just MAKE SURE that you have a card that has NO annual fee's. Visa offers this, as does master card, and possibly others but I'm not sure. Once you make sure that you don't have any fee's, pick whichever one you want.
Good luck! :) |

Captial One is good. Citi and Washington Mutual are good. Chase is good. You want to go with well-known companies. |

For your first card, always start with your bank. Cards that are not from a bank rarely accept you if you have no credit (or bad credit). Choose from the companies you prefer (a bank-sponsored card will let you "transfer" from your accounts to your credit card, as a payment). Make sure you READ the terms and conditions. In contracts, only verifiable information is valid. Verbal information doesn't hold up in courts, mediation, etc. Changes to the terms and conditions should reach you by mail, along with your statements, which you should also read. Yes, it seems like a lot, but it explains everything you need to know.
Go with any company you prefer, it's not that big of a deal. If you go with a company going bankrupt or a merger, the worst that can happen is that you'll receive a new credit card in the mail or you have to reapply. Interest rates and fees shouldn't affect you unless you're using the card irresponsibly. |

Only if you actually use it and they make money off of you. I had mine suspended and I cancelled it for not using it for too long of time, like 4 yrs. Wont do business with them again. I like my chase card better. |

Take it from someone who knows, DON'T USE CREDIT CARDS!!! I don't care how much will power you think you have.
When I got my first credit card (which coincidentally was Capital One), I promised myself that I was ONLY going to use it for emergencies. Eventually, my definition of the word "Emergency" changed:
"Uh-oh, I invited my friends out to a nice dinner and there's not enough money in my checking account to pay for the meal!!! What am I going to do!?! Wait a minute...I got my CREDIT CARD!!! (Phewww)"
That's just one example of my journey into the abyss of debt, but long story short, I got into alot of trouble and I am currently trying to dig myself out. It will take me a few years, but now that I have a plan (and more importantly, A CLUE), I will get out of debt and stay out.
Take my advice and don't apply for this card or any other card that may be offered to you. Whenever you get a credit card offer in the mail, SHRED IT IMMEDIATELY. I don't care if these vultures offer you rewards, discounts, or any other "special" incentive, SHRED THE DARN THING!!!
If you are wanting a financial safety net in case of an emergency, I suggest SAVING money in an account that is not too easy to get to, but that you can get money out if you really need it (I recommend either a regular savings account or a money market account -- something with check-writing privileges that won't charge you a penalty fee for withdrawing money). You should put about 3 to 6 months worth of expenses into that account.
And for God's sake, DON'T USE IT unless you really NEED IT.
When that day comes and you are in an emergency, you can take care of it with CA$H, not CREDIT. And make sure that you REFILL your emergency fund as soon as you can in case there's ever a next time. |

Capital one is an ok card but there are a few cards out there that have better offers but again it all depends on your credit, check out www.fastcreditcardapprovals.com here you will be able to compare all major cards side by side on rates, fees and rewards. |

No! Talk to your bank and see what they offer.
WaMu went belly up months ago and no longer exists -- it is in the process of being merged with the buyout bank. Citi has already gotten $45 billion in bailout funds and is in the process of breaking itself up. CapOne is a financial nightmare and at risk of going belly-up, too. Any bank or financial institution at risk of financial troubles starts playing games with interest rates, fees and terms to boost their take from their customers. And what happens if it goes under and you no longer have a functional card? |
