notcreative | Is Sallie Mae a reputable Online bank? |
I have read about them some, and as far as student loans go I customers are unsatisfied. But I plan on opening a High Yield Interest account or buying a CD. My question is, is Sallie Mae reputable and can I trust them with my money and personal information?
I was beginning to open an account when it asked me for my social security number, and it said that they are required by law to get it. This is contrary to what I have always heard. I have a checking and savings account with Chase and I gave them my social security number. However with an online bank I am nervous about just giving out my social security number.
So is Sallie Mae reputable for savings/CDS
and
Can I trust them with my Social.
on a sid note, are they really required to get it by law, and if not how do they get away with making such a claim? Additional Details They give out student loans, but they ARE in fact also a bank. If you go to there website there is a nice link to the highest yielding savings account you can find, earning and interest of 1.4 percent. and CD's with even higher APY. |

Sallie Mae is not a bank and does not offer checking, savings, cd or other banking information.
Sallie Mae is the leader in student loan programs.
I have no idea what you are talking about on a "sid note". I'm pretty financially savvy and have never heard of it. I googled it and nothing relevant came up.
To open an account with any reputable bank in the US, you will be required to submit your SSN. They are also required to have processes in place to protect your SSN.
- That does not mean errors don't happen. I have had my SSN tampered with at both my mortgage company and my student loan company.
You can use the FDIC website, to confirm that the bank you select provide federally backed insurance for your savings. |
|

My Take on It
 |
Of course they are required to have your social security number. It is a law because, any interest you earn on the account is reported to the IRS as income. Also, if you make any large deposit over 10k into the account it is reported.
If you don't trust giving them your social security over the net, call them and start your account via mail.
If you are this paranoid, it is probably best you keep your banking at Chase where you can walk into the bank and talk to someone. |
