Is a bank account needed to cash checks?
I work for a large retail company and the checks given out are by the main company head quarters. I don't have a bank account so I was wondering if it is possible to cash checks at ANY bank.

Thank You in advance :)

No not any bank.
Try to cash the check at the bank the check is drawn off. If not then try...
1. a Check cashing company
2. Local grocery store
3. Ask mom or dad to cash it at their bank

In any case make sure you have VALID ID.

Well, my brother told me they have check cashing places all over to get a check cashed and most of them charge a certain percent of your check for doing it. Probably cheaper to just get a bank account.

Well, no, not usually. Either cash it at the bank that issued it, or at a place with a check cashing service (for a fee).

But, free checking is common, why not open an account? It really does help you track your expenses and can make paying bills a lot easier.

you can cash the check at the bank that issues the paycheck..but it can be a hassle each time you try to cash it..hope this helps

As other people have said, there are many check cashing companies. Its usually a couple bucks for the service and about 3 percent of the check also goes to the check cashing company.
If the check has the name of a bank on it, check the address and go to that specific branch with some I.D.
You could sometimes write "Pay to the order of......." and put your mother of fathers name. Then sign the back of the check but your mother of father will have to cash it through their account.

No, you will not be able to cash the check at any bank.

whitetrashwithmoney
nope

shamik_chand
I'm not sure but if it's a bearer check then any body can cash it.
Account payee checks cannot be cashed without an accnt.Other checks have have other constraints.

I do not know why you Dont have a bank account, but that's not the point. Maybe you could open a free checking account at a bank that is close to you. You don't have to use it, but when it comes time to cash your check, you can do it at your bank. plus its nice having the option to put some money in your account and than keep some cash out.

No, you indeed need your own account. I suggest you take your cheque to a bank, and open an account with it as your first deposit. However, you will probably not have access to it for about 10 days, since most banks hold cheques for that long. If you have proper ID, you could probably cash itat someplace like moneymart, Then start your own chequing account so you could deposit your pay into it without losing the percentage that the cheque cashing place charges. Then, after a few years, if you are a good client, you will probably be offered a credit card.

Jen
A lot of banks want you to have an account with them to cash your checks. Otherwise, if the bank that issued the check has an office near you, you can go there, and they will cash their own check (possibly for a small fee).

jimdoris2k
Pretty much Yes unless you want to pay the vulchers at the check cashing companies.

You will only be able to cash it at THEIR bank. If you have your own bank account you can deposit it in your account..
