Is a debt collections agency allowed to phone a person whilst there at work,to ask for money obviously.?
They can, but if you object on reasonable grounds - such as you will lose your job - and give them an alternative number such as a mobile, or insist that you will only deal with them in writing, then they should stop calling you at work.
If they don't, then under Section 40 of the Administration of Justice Act (1971?) they are commiting an offence by behaviour likely to humiliate you.

Yes they can. All you have to do is tell them not to contact you at that phone number any longer. Legally, they can not call there once told not to.

Try searching for your state's attorney general's office. Consumer laws are governed by individual states, so that what's true here in MO might not be true where you live.

Yes. This is one more way they try and harrass you so you will pay them. Call them and confront the issue. If it is truely a debt you owe - tell them you will pay 25% to clear the entire amount - but get that in writing from them. And send a casiers check or money order. Do not write them a personal check with your account number on it.
