What they're advertising is essentially a debit card. What you'd need is called a secured credit card... you make a deposit and that becomes your line of credit. You still have to pay the bill on time and if you only make the minimum payment, you have to pay interest on the amount. The deposit works to insure the creditor in case you default. Credit means that you are being lent money so I would say that it is not a credit card. It is more like a Traveller's Check. I would call a rental agency and ask them ahead of time. You may just need to have a certain amount on the card.

It's a real card. You just have to have the money already there before you can use it. If you're renting a car, you're going to need a couple hundred dollars on the card, depending on how long you're renting the car for. |

It certainly is - best to get them from your bank. They are fabulous for the purposes you have described needing it for. I have one for ebay purchases since I don't want to give anyone a debit card or credit card #. |

I think you are talking about a debit card (like the Simon Mall Visa or Privacash or the little AmEx cards at drug stores). They are great, in general, but I've never rented a car with one.
I DO rent cars with a regular debit card or a cash deposit, so do NOT get a stupid credit card just to rent a car. Just check the websites of the companies or call them to find one that will accept a debit card.
CREDIT cards suck, no matter where they come from. If you are smart, you will never get one. |
