Is anyone responsible for my credit card debt in the event of my death?

Credit Guru
When you die your estate will go through Probate, where all your assets(if you have any) and your debts will be reconciled. If you are the only signer on the accounts at your death and there isn't enough assets to cover your debts then the creditors will take their share determined by the court and write the balance off.

If there is a co-signer then they will go after them for payment.

I think if you are married your spouse may be responsible but I know for sure if anyone Else's name is on your card they are very responsible. Check with your card co. and see if they have an insurance policy to cover all payments if you should die. Also check the information they send you to see if the answer is in it. I would say call but I am sure they will say yes. If you have legal advice near you call and ask them. But don't forget the each card has different rules.

There is not enough information to answer your question.

Yes, the person that gets your estate.

Yes, I agree with the first answer. Your estate has to pay for your debt.

Look, if you are considering death, to get away from your credit cards, or crumby life.....you can work through your debt and problems...

my friend had some serous gambling problems and was basically homeless, and ready to die, with the help of god she was able to turn her life around, she filed for bankruptcy, got all her debt wiped away....$25,000. and now is doing well...she has a HS diploma, and is now making $60,000 a year as a property manager...she filed for bankruptcy approx. a year ago....WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR CAN MAKE!

you can work through it...best wishes...

it is mostly the fault of the credit card companies for giving credit out to anyone.....they are worse than casinos....

I heard a good statement once...you can't squeeze water from a rock....if you don't got the money to pay it, well, you don't got the money to pay it...

The credit card companies charge crazy rates to make up for the people that wind up defaulting or bankrupting, its a cost of doing business...

tell all your creditors you are filing for bankruptcy...keeping work hard, or start. Cut your costs and save your money...and go to church at least once or twice a month...

From what I've read in the site below, your estate pays for whatever debt it can.

I've heard your family (usually the people who get your estate) have to pay for it. They can try to fight it with a lawyer. I heard a story about an old lady whose family was still getting calls about her debt three years after her death -- they finally had to settle some portion of it.
