Credit counselors do more than just help you deal with debt, as long as you find the right agency. Look for an established agency that has a satisfactory rating with the Better Business Bureau. You want to make sure they are free of an unusual pattern of complaints.
Credit counselors can help you review your credit reports, develop a budget and find a strategy to improve your financial standing. They may recommend eliminating debt or increasing your savings. If you are deep in debt, a debt management plan can be developed to drop your interest rates and reduce your payments. |

Generally it is.
When you have decided to work with a counselor to decrease the size of your credit card debt you it is expected that you will follow a very specific plan. During the consultation, you and your counselor will go over your credit card balances and determine how much debt you have incurred and the methods you can use to eliminate the debt. If you choose, the counselor will begin by calling the creditors on your behalf and begin negotiating for lower monthly payments along with stopping the rising interest rates and/or any fees that are associated with the account. Most creditors will agree to this as long you are diligent to the plan set forth by the credit card debt counselor. You should know that once you enter a plan to eliminate your debt you will no longer have access to the credit accounts.
Once the counselor has finalized negotiations with your creditors, you will then work out a payment method with the counseling agency. Instead of paying several creditors each month, you will now only write one check to the agency who will then distribute that payment to your creditors. You will still receive monthly statements and it is important that you review them to verify they are receiving the monthly payment that both you and they agreed. If you see a discrepancy, contact your credit card debt counseling agency immediately to rectify the problem.

Yes, but it depends on the company. Research the company first. Most consolidate debts and reduce intrest... but they charge a monthly fee for them selves as well. ($30-70) But maybe worth it if your only paying min. payments. |

It can really help a lot of you have tremendous debt. If you are less than 5k in debt, i would suggest calling your creditors directly to make managed payments, as credit counseling can lower your credit rating somewhat |

Yes it is! However beware of the companies. You need to do your homework. Check with your local United Way they should be able to refer you to a true non-profit credit counseling service. You can also check with the Better Business Bureau. Beware this is a new area for people to get scammed in. Just do your homework first so you don't end up in a worse situation than what you started with! |

Sometimes, if you don't have a plan or the will power to follow a plan, they take most of the responsibility away from you.
They are good at getting all the excessive charges taken off. You can do that yourself to, but it takes some will power! |
