Is it BAD to pay my credit cards off in one lump sum??
I was told that it could be bad for your credit score to pay off your credit cards all at once - Is this true? If so, how BAD could it hurt my score & for how long?

I am about $15K in CC debt, but once we sell our home, we intend on paying it off, completely. Is this a bad idea?

totally untrue-- paying in full is an EXCELLENT IDEA. I jsut paid a few thousand off and my score shot up over 50 points. Around 30% of your score is based on utilization, which is how much of your limit you're using up (you want less than 30-40%.)

A lot of people believe you must have a balance/payment due in order to record a 'good payment history"....but in fact you don't. As long as you're current (and having no balance counts as current) you get credit for a payment that month as far as the credit bureaus are concerned.

Get debt free whli you've got the chance. Kudos!

no its not whats it is bad is all the hundreds of your hard earned monies that you are throwing away on interest charges.

Nope.... its ALWAYS ALWAYS good to pay off your cards. Keep in mind that the credit card companies spread crap like that in order to ensure that they eek out every measley penny of interest from you. Get rid of your debt and don't get back in...

It is BAD to CANCEL the credit cards...but it is NEVER BAD to have an open credit card with a 0 balance on it.

Pay them off, even if they are closed. Your credit will thank you.

Pay them off and change the way you use them. Carrying credit card debt is one of the most foolish financial mistakes that we make.

It does no good to "save" 25% at a sale and charge it on a card that eats up the 25% in fees and interest.

HELL NO
this is a GREAT IDEA
FANTASTIC
Do it
I owed 4k on a card with a 5k limit.
Paid it off lump sum and my credit score must have increased because said cc company raised my limit to 8k and a few weeks after that there were so many damn offers of credit cards in my mailbox that the mailman had to withhold my mail when I left town for five days.
I say pay it off
your credit will go up
the thing to do is to make sure you dont charge up stuff again but at the same time you want to keep that credit line active
Maybe you can buy a latte at mcdonalds using that card once per month to keep it active

Paying them off is good. Your credit score is determined by how much credit you have vs. what you owe against that amount. The less you owe the better your score. This won't do anything but help you.

Paying them off in FULL is the best thing you can do...and then cut up and notify the companies that you want the cards canceled on all the cards you DON'T need to use again.
That will help your credit rating immensely...but it does NOT happen fast...reports on your credit rating take months to make a difference. But if anyone (bank, loan broker, etc.) call to confirm any credit sources if you went for a loan, they would be told it was paid off in full in advance...which is good for you.

Creditors do not care in what amounts you pay off your accounts (obviously more than the minimum). Paying off a $15,000 debt is nothing more than a good thing in my opinions, and I'm sure your creditors will be elated when you do so.

do you have established credit? If so, then go ahead and pay them off when you have the money. If you are just starting to establish your credit, you need to make a few months payment before paying off the balance. This shows the CC companies that you are a good risk and that you do pay back money.
