Is it Illegal for a bank to do this?
My discover card payment is almost 300.00 dollars and only ten of it goes to the principal. That seems very extreme to me.Isn't there a law against this?

Its very very shady, unfortunately its also legal.

gcason
It is legal, but immoral.

Still, the easy solution is not to carry a balance on any credit cards. If you can't afford it, don't buy it. Save up and buy things cash.

The credit card industry makes billions a year because people don't understand how much interest they pay when they use easy credit.

No it's not illegal. Unfortunately, it's what you signed up for. Now I did some simple math. Assuming that $300 is your minimum payment and you have a 20% APR, you have about 18,000 on that card. I think the bigger issue right now should be figuring out a way to pay that debt back. It is not going to get any easier down the road.

They can spread the payments out for over 18 years so it is not illegal. Does it suck? Absolutely. Try to pay more if you can.

It is sad but they can do it. You could try to call them and ask for a lower rate, this works sometimes. Good luck and just try to pay moe on it also.

It isn't illegal. It is the terms of your agreement. You probably have a high interest rate, or maybe you continue to rack up fees. Payments to credit cards typically apply to interest first and then the balance.

Read your statement to see what is causing your payment to be so high. If everything seems to be alright, maybe you should apply for a balance transfer credit card. You will probably save several hundred each year.

bdancer222
Guess what? You can actually pay more than the minimum .... a lot more. In fact, many of us only charge what we can afford to pay in full each month. We don't pay any interest.

If your minimum payment is $300, you have ran up a pretty big balance. You need to stop using credit cards and figure out how to pay off that big debt.

bud68
No. You obviously have a very high interest rate card.

My guess is the majority is going towards late fees, and overlimit fees, those are taken out and covered first before anything goes on the principle Pay ontime and get it below your limit and things will change

If you paid 310 then 20 would go toward the principal. That's twice as much!

They are doing people who are having a bad month a favor by requiring a small minimum payment that just covers interest. There is no law that says you can't pay more than the minimum.
