Marie S | Is it a person or a house that is blacklisted as my son is in dept & i'm frightned to ask for credit? |
|
|

just trying to make a difference
 |
Hi, in the UK it is people and not houses which get a bad credit rating through debt.
If your son was living at the same property as you (even if you have different names) then it will show up on your credit report, however lenders will look at the fact that it was not you, but someone else at the house, who was in debt.
If you are worried about asking for credit, and presumably being turned down, then why not get a copy of your credit report and see what it says before you ask any one for credit - you can also challenge anything on it which you do not agree with.
Experian is the largest and most used credit reference agency in the UK, it only costs a few pounds to get a copy of your credit record so why not get a copy to put your mind at rest. http://www.experian.co.uk/consumer/index.html |

Its more do do with the person rather than the address. But it can have an influence. If you can show that you have no financial relationship with your son, then you should be ok. |

Marie, don't know if you listen to Martin Lewis, Money expert - but he advises to check with Experian for a credit report, FREE of charge...
Register with them, but before the month is through just ring them and cancel your account - it's a simple as that - they don't ask questions why...Lots of people have used this, perfectly legit, no obligations. You will be given a report on any company that you have dealt with in the past, whether it is mail order, credit card application or insurance. Having said that, not ALL companies will necessarily be listed. Below is the link to them, please use it to ease your mind in checking if you can apply for credit.
http://www.creditexpert.co.uk/credit-report.aspx
P.S. No need to go for the special report (fee) if the other one gives you your answer...
All those like Jeep, David H and Star, R Stoofa are correct in saying that it is the person NOT the address - in the UK
I worked for Financial Services in M&S - and only the person was targeted... |

It's the person, but the address may come up on a check, but provided you do not have the same name you should be OK. |

It used to be the house/property, but got changed because of blacklisting innocent people. However, if the names are the same, it can influence credit blacklisting. If a person who has financial problems does not inform their creditors when they move, letters etc can still be sent to that address, and if the company is unaware of this there is a possibility of bailiffs arriving on the doorstep of the new (innocent) tenant. |

Officially it is the person these days, it used to be an address. However as your son will probably have the same surname as you and there is a clear financial link between you it may prove slightly more difficult. Check out www.moneysupermarket.com you should find lots of useful information there. |

All they can do is deny you. Ask for credit, ask and ye shall receive. |

It's your son, not your address. Provided that you have a clear record and your name isn't the same as your son's then you should be OK |

My house was black listed not me and i couldn't do anything about it. I was not allowed any credit/help/finances/etc etc because of this. It didn't matter about my name ! I would definitely get it checked out legally, it would be far better then you will know exactly ! Try Citizen's Advice Bureau, they are very good and will help in any way they can. This needs to be clarified asap ! Good luck with it. Once you know, you will be more settled and to know what to do next. Hope it helps ! People on here seems to forget that unless they know the facts, they shouldn't say anything. |

i am very much in debt but my husband isnt. he finds credit really easy to get so I reckon t must be the person, rather than the house. Also always ask the worst that can happen is that they say no. You are not reported for asking only for missing a payment or being in debt. |

If you are the Sr. and your son is the Jr. and he screws his credit up and you live in Alabama, did you know that your credit will go bad too because he lives with you?
It happened to a friend of mine in Alabama,. He fought it and lost. His perfect credit is ruined because of his son having the same name, but different signature. |

I work in this field and can assure you that it is a person rather than a property that would be affected by a poor credit history - there is no such thing as a 'blacklist' - it is a myth and doesn't exist!!!
If you have ever applied for a loan or other finance with your son then the chances are that the company will have recorded a financial association with a credit reference agency between you and your son and can mean any companies you apply to for credit in the future can then take into account his credit history when making a decision on your application.
Information obtained via a credit check will be used in conjunction with other information the company you apply to hold (such as info you gave them) when making the decision......credit reference agencies provide credit scores during credit checks and different companies use these scores in different ways when making their decision on your application which would mean that even if your son does have a poor credit history and there is a financial association recorded between you you are still in with a (reduced) chance of acceptance. |

Hi there, Dont worry about asking for credit as it is not you that is blacklisted. If your son is blacklisted and he was residing at and using your address at the time then your house will be blacklisted. The house i live in is blacklisted due to previous tennants but i am not blacklisted and i have had credit. |

its the person, not the household. That is unless you co-signed a loan for him, then you get a negative rating also. |

pollyrose is absolutely right. same thing happened to us in the uk but not in the us. we had no problems getting credit at all in the us because our credit rating was based solely on our own credit history. this is why when you apply for credit in the us the creditor asks for your social security number to check your rating. it identifies you specifically as you rather than the address at which you live. in the uk they only went by our home address and the person who owned the house before us was delinquent with many different creditors. fortunately for us, we had large savings and didn't really need credit in the uk because we absolutely were not going to get it without much legal help as long as we lived in that house.
conversely, friends of ours in the uk who never paid their bills recently moved to a new house they wanted to buy where the previous owner paid all his bills on time. within just weeks they were given a mortgage based on the good credit rating attached to the house they moved into. they didn't even have to prove they had any income or enough income to be able to pay a mortgage. if the previous owner didn't pay his bills they wouldn't have been able to get the mortgage. so someone else's good credit history can also help you.
i believe the majority of people answering this question are americans and the laws are extremely different between the uk and the us. i just can't understand the logic of the uk way but have experienced it first hand. |
