Is it against the law for a store to ask for your I.D. when using your credit card?

Absolutely not illegal.

The place I buy smokes at ask me for mine every time I go in there and I have been going there for over 3-years.

Actually it's a good practice, more places should do it as far as I am concerned.

No, it isn't against the law. Why would you object, anyway? It helps to protect you against fraud.

No and for consumer protection, they should do it more often.

No, it's not against the law. Some stores require ID when using a credit card because they need to make sure that the card is yours. It's for the store's protection.

No, there checking to make sure the signature on the card matches the signature on the bill.

waffleage
No?? That's what they're supposed to do. Especially if the back of your ID is not signed or if they are suspicious. They're allowed to.

NO! Be glad they do. Think what would happen it someone else got hold of your card and was able to charge because the store didn't ask for ID. You'd be paying for things someone else has.

Actually, in the book merchants get from their processor, it says that they're supposed to do it as a normal procedure. Be greatful when someone doesn't bother.

Every one of these people is wrong above me. You are on the wrong forum for advice, believe me. It is not illegal to ask for id however it is not required. Your drivers license is for what again????? So you are telling me that in order to use a credit card you have to have a driver's license to use a credit card??? Not true at all, credit card companies state that if the back of a card is signed that person agreed to the stipulations and they are 100 percent guarded against theft. My store has taken a few stolen cards and we get paid every time and the person is responsible for nothing. Trust me I own a business and have had somebody complain to a credit card company that I made them show me id, they said they did not show id and I did not complete sale. When I applied to accept credit cards I had to agree to take all cards signed and have no minimum limits on purchases (most people don't care but it is a rule and if you see it and don't believe me call the credit card company). You talk about identity theft but what about your safety when it comes to having somebody see you personal information, like date of birth and where you live? Trust me go to www.creditboards.com the best credit forum on the internet and ask this same question. They have a section dedicated just to that, then email me and tell me if I was wrong. That goes for anybody here.................... and to the guy below me I am a merchant and do over a million a year in credit cards, but nowhere does it say I am supposed to check for a driver's license. So your telling me they say if the person does not drive they can't use a credit card? Jeez

blahblahblahblahblah
No I always do if it's not signed, it helps protect against fraud
