Is it best to ring debt collector companies?
When it isnt your debt.I keep getting debt collector letters sent to my address, they are not for me,its not even for a previous tenant and I have lived at my address for 4 years.after the first letter I told one of my friends and said I was thinking of ringing the company and hopefully resolving it over the phone, but I couldnt prove my ID over the phone.but it seems like the logical thing to do.But he says its best not to anything unless baliffs come round,in which case I should invite them in and show them prove of my ID,that theyve got the wrong person and wrong address. I sent one return to sender that i got this morning.

No need to worry about it unless you just want the mail to stop. Might be a good idea just to give them a call just make sure the bailiffs don't come around and mistakenly repo your stuff .

My advice is to go to the National Debtline website and download sample letters to send to these people.

If you ring them, they will continue to harass you. They will want all your personal details like date of birth, bank details, place of employment etc. They may say they accept who you are and the next thing you know, the debt is in your name.

A lot of what they do is borderline legal and some don't bother about that.

If the letter is not in your name, bin them and stop reading other peoples post.

Bailiffs will not turn up on your doorstep until a court has ordered it and as the debt is not yours, you have nothing to fear.

Cool Hal
I would just return to sender as you have done saying not known at this address. You could also contact them over the phone they have ways of checking the info that you give them.

Either way there is no need to worry

I wouldn't invite the bailiffs in at all. I'd call citizens advice bureau and see if they can help. Bailiffs and debt recovery services are notorious for trying to enforce and bully people who aren't the original owner of the debt. I'd also get a credit check done to find out if somebody has used your address fraudulently.

If the bailiffs turn up, call the police, they're the only ones who can get rid of them.

stanthemansmum
Just label them all 'not at this address'. Never ever invite a bailiff into your house - show them your ID at the door. Some will not care that the debt is not yours, they just want it paid so they get their commission.

Hi

Dont invite any bailiffs in - ever

Just write a letter to the companies with the (unopened) collection letter explaining that the person the who they are trying to reach does not live at this address and leave it at that.

Or
(this is what I would do!)

Simple, just stike a line through the address (your address on the letter), and write on the envelope "return to sender - no such person at this address" and pop it in a letter box.

If anyone turns up at your door you can show them prove that you are not the person they are seeking while they stand on the doorstep.

I would contact the Citizens Advice Bureau or consumerdirect.gov.uk

First of all I would ring them and tell them that this person is no longer at this address. This way it shows a pro-active response on your part, you could even write a brief letter to confirm the telephone conversation and keep a copy for your records. You could also provide them with proof that you are not that person but are living at this address by sending a copy of a utility bill or something.
Second of all I would contact the estate agents/ renting agency that sold you the property. Tell them you keep receiving these letters and ask them to contact the previous occupier (even tho you said it wasn’t them) to see if they know anything and/or who they took the property over from.
Its possible that its someone using your address that has never lived there but either way I wouldn’t wait till the bailiffs come round as they wont care all they know is what they’ve been instructed to carry out. Good luck

saved_astronaut
YES, call them & explain this. if the're not helpful, threaten 2 call yer atty & DO IT

Best Wishes!!!
