Actually for the best credit score and profile you need 3 credit card accounts (revolving) all with balances below 30% of your limit and 2 cars, boats, homes, furniture or personal accounts (installment) all with good long payment history's.

You have to be careful with credit cards or the interest will eat you alive. I always recommend useing them for everyday things, never exceed 30% of your limit in any month and pay in full before the due date.

And anyone that say's a 0 credit score is a good thing is simply uninformed or stupid.

NO. You dont need any credit cards. You may want a credit card but you dont need one.
People obsses with this fico (I Love Debt) score.
Cedit card companies make all the rules and change the rules anytime they want. The banks spend millions brainwashing people into thinking they have to have credit cards and a good I Love Debt score to make it in todays world. That's a load of crap. Pay as you go and you will come out ahead.
You dont need a fico score to buy a house. Just find a bank that does manual underwritting.
Save for emergancies and cars. You dont need a new car either.
If you pay as you go. You will not have any payments. If you have no payments you'll have money.

of course Spifman is gonna tell you to get credit. Thats what he does for a living. If no one financed cars he would be out of a job.
A 0 I Love debt score is the best.
Debt Free is the way to be!

is allways good to have at least one for emergencies but now days you could get a debit credit card from you bank which will work the same as long you have funds in there other wise there are alot of options when it comes to credit cards www.fastcreditcardapprovals.com has them all check them out here you are able to compare side by side for rates and rewards, good, bad or no credit they have the right card for you

It depends... If you are looking for building credit history you better have three, not one, cards and manage them right: pay on time, keep low balances, pay them in full to avoid interest charges.
Just for emergencies and WEB based purchases, bank Master or Visa cards seems more convenient. They normally are secured by your bank account and it is easier to watch them to prevent the fraud activity.
I personally prefer to have a few credit cards with cash rebate and rewards. I am paying with credit everywhere I can if there are no fees for using credit card. This year I return about one grand with 30+ K in credit card payments plus interest on my checking account, but not too much because I am paying all balances in full every month. I have them for quite some time and credit limits are so high that I never worry about balances.
So, it is up to you... You can manage.. go for it, have doubts... avoid.

Chelsea
you need one... mastercard or visa are both pretty standard

In order to build a good credit history which you will need later in life to buy a car, house, etc. you should have at least one credit card. Even if it has a small credit limit like $200. You should use it at least 2 times per year for small purchases $20-$50 and pay the balance off as soon as you receive your bill. This pattern of paying on time will be recorded in your credit history and send you on your way to a high credit score in the future. Without some record of how well you pay your bills on-time it will be difficult for companies to give you good deals on interest rates for cars, homes, etc. in the future.

well... depends on you. For me, a Credit Card was a good thing. It can hold you over in a tight spot, it builds your credit and if you pay it off always on time, it's a great thing to have.

You just have to know yourself and make sure that you're responsible enough for it.

dgrissmer
You need at least one to show you have credit so you can buy a house or car. If you don't have any credit it's hard to buy certain things.

MJ3000
It's good to have one or maybe two credit cards as long as you don't abuse them and pay them off completely at least every couple of months. This helps build your credit rating so when you want to make a larger purchase later that requires a large loan (house, car), you'll get a better rate.

Mystery
i'd be lost without mine. i am responsible with them

jmiller
You can have one to build credit.

ReadDeal
Get at least one only if you can be responsible with it. Use it with care and treat it like cash. There are some things you cannot do with cash -- pay for airlines ticket and not be subjected to extra screening, buy an iPhone etc.

Do this - create a new bank account (if it is free). Every day, based on your card usage, transfer the money from your checking account to this new account. When the time comes to pay the bill, pay it in full every time from this new account.

Get a card that does not have an annual fees and has a free rewards program. These rewards programs are like getting 1% rebate on everything you buy (or more on select items).

You don't need any. You can live life just fine without going into debt with a credit card. A fico score of zero is great. Don't worship at the fico alter.

And don't let anyone tell you that you have to have a credit card or a credit history to get a car or a mortgage or shop online or anything like that. Bull. That's brainwashing by corporate america. You can do all these things without a fico score or a credit card.

Be different. Live with a 0 fico score.

faydedbymr2
I used to work for Citi credit cards. You must get one as soon as possible to establish a credit history or else you will have a low credit score. Visa and Mastercard are good ones. American Express is not a credit card, it is a charge card, APR's are higher for this one, but they up your limit faster. Macy's is an easy one to get, they will start you out low, but they are easy to get even with a part time job only. Get your cell phone in your name to establish credit as well. IT is really important or else when you try to get credit, a loan, or a house in the future you want to be judged by your very well maintained credt score. ALSO, DO NOT APPLY for too many cards, or useless ones because the more you apply the more that that dings your credit. Shopping around for car insurance also lowers your credit score by dinging it.

There are places that require credit cards to rent cars or hotel rooms etc. If you pay cash you will be subjected to extra screening on airliines too. Have one low interest credit card, use it wisely, pay it off fully on time each month. This is a good way to keep your credit score high.

I think you need one.My aunt died several states away, and I couldn't even book a flight without a credit card.

Liz67
I think you should at least have one for emergencies.

If you are not tempted to spend more money than you actually have, then I would say it helps to have at least one credit card. For some payments, even for quick check-ins at airports etc.
