Is it better to close credit accounts from furniture and clothing stores if you don't use them or leave open?

HERE's THE OFFICIAL ANSWER!!! :)

It depends on what your credit limit is on those cards. If all your department/furniture store cards are equal to half of your available borrowing power (i.e., your sears card has 1000.00 limit, and your Mastercard has 1000.00 limit, equalling $2000.00 borrowing power), closing your account at sears would actually hurt your credit, because your borrowing power would go down. How long those cards have been established factors in, as well. I know a LOT about this stuff, way too much to put on here. Msg me with more specifics (no, I'm not trying to steal your identity), and I'll be glad to help! ~ Rick

Leave it open, but tell yourself that it is CLOSED and forget about it.

It may be of use at a time of need .

If you are not using them close them. Clothing store accounts may be better to leave open so that if you ever need it you'll have it. The furniture store credit you should close, how many times a year will you buy a sofa, table, chair. get rid of that one. As long as you maintain your accounts pay when you have to, not be late or miss your payments you should be fine. By the way never use so much credit that you have to kill yourself to pay it back. :)

close them . open accounts with no balance actually hurt your credit

migity696
close them, after six months of no charges they start to actually hurt your credit score. Although, just to let you know, it will also hurt your credit score to close them.

hirebookkeeper
I say close them

christiliz17
Keeping them open may help your credit rating. Check this out:

4. Don’t Close Old Accounts

In the past people were told to close old accounts they weren’t using. But with today's current scoring methods that could actually hurt your credit score.

Closing old or paid off credit accounts lowers the total credit available to you and makes any balances you have appear larger in credit score calculations. Closing your oldest accounts can actually shorten the length of your credit history and to a lender it makes you less credit worthy.

If you are trying to minimize identity theft and it's worth the peace of mind for you to close your old or paid off accounts, the good news is it will only lower you score a minimal amount. But just by keeping those old accounts open you can raise credit score for you.

CSPEAK
You should close them. The open accounts will lower your credit score and will affect your rate and ability to borrow when you want something big like a car or home.

It is better if leave them open if you do not have a lot of credit, just use it once and pay it off it gives you better credit ratings.

don a
It will close of a year anyway. It does hurt if you have to many credit cards, but not that much people think.

You have 2 right answers! everyone else is WRONG! You should keep them open. It does help show that u are able to have a credit limit with other companies and maintain it! Gives u a better chance to get a loan on a house or car then just closing them. If your worry bout id theft, shred the cards,(if you plan to not use them within the expiration date) But do keep them open!!
